When I first got my car the dome lights would come on with the door being opened. I never got the lights to come on with the dimmer switch but now they dont even come on with the door being opened. This all started when I went through to fix my gauges. I tried checking all the wires. I replaced all the fuses in the fuse box that needed to be replaced. On top of that I even tried reading off of the wiring diagram. I was wanting to know a good place to start and if you guys could get me a picture of..... I tried searching on google and the internet and found nothing. Appreciate the help fellas. This would pretty much finish the car with this post and the posts I have up.

the key to helping you with your problem would be the year make and model of the car in question.

did you check for power at the light?bad bulb?just to check the easy stuff first.

Dominic did you see the post about the 70 manual?

Free download:

the link:

This manual does not follow conventional Mopar page numbers, so you'll have to "play" with the page numbers

In my viewer, page 352 shows light bulbs and fuses, and is the "general start" of the wiring diagrams

Page 378--379 is the instrument panel section for Belvedere (GTX/ RR)

On page 8-147 (379) find the "panel lamp dimmer" toward the right, not far from top of page. See wire "M2-18Y" on the bottom of the dimmer

This yellow runs all over, and connects to ONE side of the dome lights and is GROUNDED when you either open a door, or turn the dimmer control all the way to the dome "click"

Find the fuse panel, and the wire coming off the bottom "EMERGENCY FLASHER D31-18BK"

THIS IS the power that eventually feeds to the dome lights. It goes to the emergency flasher, where one terminal is used simply as a junction. From the emergency flasher, it becomes

D3-18P which runs to the STOP LIGHT SWITCH and is used AGAIN simply as a junction. That wire branches off and becomes

M1-18P AND THIS WIRE is what feeds power to the dome lights

About in the center right of page 8-147 (379) find the fuse box, then go down and find the connector labled

"To dome light wiring (body)"

NOTE that there is

M1-18P going to one terminal. This is POWER going to the lamps

Note that there is

M2 (yellow) series wires going to the other terminal. THESE wires go to the dash dimmer "dome switch" as well as the door switches, and become GROUNDED in order to turn the lamps on.

Now go up to page 353, wiring index (8-121) Notice "body wiring except station wagons, Belvedere" is page 8-123. This is actually page 355 in the pdf

Notice that at the very top of the page they show the dome lamp, and it in fact has a pink and yellow wire going to it. This is the way any other optional courtesy lamps are wired.

So you must have power at the fuse supplying the stop lamps and emergency flasher, and they should work

You should have power to one side of the dome lamps at all times, as this fuse is always hot.

You should be able to short the door switch (yellow) wire to ground and get the lamp to come on.

Okay I have a 1970 dodge Charger 500(383/4B). I did notice that by the switch there is a light green wire that is not connected with a ball point end(similar to a sparkplug end) not connected to the door switch. Is that the emergency flasher or ground? This is just trying to fix the dome light to when the door opens.

the"ball point end"you are refering to is the wiring for the dome and such.power and grounds for the system use these ends.you just need to find where it plugs in.

Light green is associated with the headlight delay relay NOT the dome lights.

Once again, go to page 379 of the manual I posted, and find the headlight switch. Start at the very top terminal of the switch and follow L2A-16LG up, over and down. I'd bet that is what you are looking at. That same wire branches off and is supplying headlight power to the dimmer switch

Then go down a couple of pages to 381 (8-149) and scroll down watching the right side of the page until you find the "headlight delay relay" circuit. This does NOT need to be there for the headlights to work. This is the optional delay relay. Notice the bottom wire coming into the switch from a 20A inline fuse is light green. This is what mates to the connector above

440, i just have to say that was a great explanation. Seems like u actually opened the book up and searched it out for him. My dome light doesnt work either (way too many things to worry about first), but thanks, i'm bookmarking this one.
