So I had my dad over to check out this motor of mine and he had an interesting idea. Junk the truck 413 block (those of you following my archaeological dig thread- stay tuned for further drama) and build a nasty 383. Goin in my 69 belvedere with 727, which we plan on running a few times a year at local nostalgia races but mostly street use.

Why a 383? Well, as he put it, everyone has a 440 and besides, let's wipe some smiles off the faces of some chebby guys. And besides, he's payin (mostly). :hello2:

Is it worth it? Thinkin some alum heads, nice compression, maybe even use the forged crank from the 413 and stroke it.

What do you guys think?

sounds like an awesome idea.

ally heads
11.1 comp
stroke it maybe
550hp be nice?

Since I found them pistons, I was kinda likin the 413. Pistons for the 383 are about the same price. But I cannot argue with the 383. I'm buildin one too......but if I had the 413 I think I would build that to be different especially knowing there are affordable pistons. That has me kinda stoked.

Yeah me too, rusty, those 413 pistons are really making me do some thinking for sure. Fr some reason, my dad (who fought me on even buying the car) suddenly wants to do a father son motor build and he seems to have his mind pretty set on a 383, which i think is kinda cool too. Combine that with the hacking on the front of the 413 block, posible problems from that dang fuel pump pushrod and i dunno, part of me wants to walk away, part of me doesnt.

Tell you what I would do. I wish my dad was still here. Do the 383 with him, but keep the 413 for a later date. Nothin says you gotta throw it in the ditch. That'll be fun. Yall will be makin memories that'll last a lifetime.

I'm a big 383 fan. Had a couple of nice running ones back in the 80's that I took care of business with. It was in my 68 RR and the car ran mid 13's on street tires at 105 MPH. I'm not sure how fast you want to go but you can get to the mid 13's with mostly factory parts and not a lot of money. Cam, headers, 10:1 CR, carb and intake, free up the exhaust.

One comment I'll make is since the 383 isn't a torque monster it can really benefit from a 108 deg lobe separation cam and some gear to match. You don't need a .600 lift cam either; just a .470"-ish lift / 280 deg stick will do the trick. The increased overlap will make more peak torque but you'll have to get to the higher RPM to use it. Just drive it like a two stroke and stay on the pipe.
