What are your thoughts on this movie?

There is definitely going to be a part II, they need to develop the back story on the Predator.

I liked it, it was not a dumbed down thoughtless movie for the dumbed down masses that are part of this country, it was a thoughtful and intelligent movie for sure! High praise!

:sideways tongue:I was looking forward to seeing the film, being a prequel to Alien. It falls well short of the mark even though it has its moments..:tearyeyed:

I agree. It was 'different' than I thought it would be but enjoyable. There are some holes in the story but from a SFX stand point it was great.

You do have to pay attention to keep up with what's going on.

There were a few minor "why would they make that decision" or "what are the odds of that happening" moments, but very few.
I agree they had big shoes to fill. I was not aware that it was an Alien prequel, just that it was a Ridley Scott thing.
As a stand alone show it's good, with the prequel twist at the end it's cool, but beacuse of the signifiance of the origiinal, I agree there was a lot of untapped potential.
...and I could have used more Charlize Theron. Kind of a weak role for her.

I need to know a good use for Charlize Theron.....

It will be on HBO by the end of Summer, then I can see it in the comfort of my own lazy boy, my big flat screen TV & surround sound, I spent way too much for, with No annoying multitude of adolescents or $5 each Candy, Popcorn & Coke to have to deal with either...LOL... Man I sound like my Pops more & more everyday... Ha Ha

I was pretty disappointed with it. It seemed like Scott set out to make a prequel to Alien, but couldn't due to some copyright or other issues and decided to make an un-prequel prequel. If you see interviews he's done, he admits this is not a prequel, but just has some elements of a prequel in it. WTF???

What really bugged me was he set the climax out to look like he was setting the opening stage for Alien, but everything happened on a different planet, the "gunner" seat in Alien was occupied while the one in this movie would have been empty, etc. Plus going by this movie, the first alien wasn't created until well into the future, which pretty well trashes the AVP storylines. Another downer were all the sideline stories that did nothing but eat up a lot of time, like the whole Weyland angle.

Lastly, Scott needs someone like James Cameron to keep his movies honest. That map scene with the globe of our Earth showing modern continental arrangements, when it should have showed the continents arranged the way they were before life evolved, was something a detail nut like Cameron would have never let slide by.

Actually no, the digital map of the earth as you indicate was about 2,000 yrs ago, the continents likely were not too far off from where they are now, perhaps an inch or two, but not discernible at that scale. Remember, in that control room where the planets were displayed was about the time of Jesus, my take is that the Engineers were pissed that humanity keeps ******* up, this time they killed one of their own; Jesus, so they were out to slaughter us.

**** SPOILER ALERT ****

Humans have been around for a lot more than 2,000 years. The engineer who deposited his DNA (if that's what you can call it) we took as being the creator of biological life, with his DNA turning into plants, dinosaurs, people, bugs, Chevy owners, etc., so this would have had to occur millions and millions of years ago. I don't recall seeing any fauna in the opening scene, just rocks and water, so this guy was the start of it all.

This approach was pretty much confirmed in the way the alien evolved. First it was slime, then once it adapted to human DNA, it became the squidly looking thing. Then once it adapted to engineer DNA, it became the alien wannabee. So we're thinking his DNA started as an engineer, but as it mutated and hooked up with proteins and enzymes on Earth, it could become anything.

Of course, none of this explains why Theron kept running in the direction of where the ship was falling instead of taking a few steps to the side. :)

Because she was singularly fixed on her objectives; being heir apparent to her father, and finding some way to get rid of that beloved so-called brother her father had for her called David. That's why she didn't dodge the ship falling on her. I never suggested humanity is 2k yrs old, only that the Engineers plan fell apart 2k yrs ago in that dome in their ship when the alien ooze took form and exterminated them all but mr. sleepy. The opening scene is rife with self sacrifice for the better good, all the disemboweling and such was pretty intense!

Ok, went to see it last night & I thought that it was ok, but I feel that it opened up more questions than it answered. The original Alien series (all with Sigourney Weaver) were good movies and they still hold up today. The big question for me is this: Why, 33 years after the original Alien came out, did they feel that they had to make a prequil now? Of course, the answer is that with all the subsequent aweful Alien movies, Alien vs Predator, Alien vs Jason, Alien vs Freddy, Alien vs the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders & whatever other silly nonsense they dished out, a prequil was the only place this "franchise" had left to go. So, instead of coming out with a new original idea, I guess that they feel the need to milk it for all it is worth. But when Alien Prequil #2 comes out in a couple of years, I'll skip it.

That's a good question, and one I'm sure the Predator folks are asking since this movie completely blows out the AVP storylines. BTW, I thought the first AVP movie sucked, but the second one wasn't bad.

As for opening more questions than it answered, that's exactly what my sons both said. I think the reason for it was there were copyright restrictions on what Scott could do being as he doesn't own the Alien franchise, which is why he's so adamant in interviews that this isn't a prequel even though it's pretty obvious he was trying to make it one.

The most glaring example is the name of the planet they're on. The aliens were found on LV-426, but the planet in Prometheus is LV-223. Scott stages the crash of the ship to look exactly like the ship found at the start of Alien, but they're on the wrong planet. Also, the pilot of the engineer ship on LV-426 is in the "gunner's" seat, but the engineer on the Prometheus ship leaves the ship to go to the lifeboat, so he couldn't be found in the seat. I think it's pretty obvious he started shooting with a prequel in mind, but then had to make changes so he could say it wasn't a prequel.

...so why after a few thousands of years in stasis, would an extraterrestreial being of sufficient intelligence to engineer DNA altering substances, and, after a seemingly severe threat to his species entire existance, upon being revived from said statis, and addressed by multiple beings, intelligent enough to have found his planet, and at least also intelligent enough to have made an attempt to communicate in his native language, and quaite possibly identifiable as the decendants of a seeding experiment of his own design...why would that being ONLY attack and attempt to destroy those (human) beings, and not make any attempt to communicate whatsoever, especially upon relizing that he may be the sole survivor of his species?????

...and I certainly hope the engineers had the foresight to program an extremely short lifespan into their extermination method creatures. even though it seems that such is not the case.

...perhaps humans turned out to be more of a monstrousity than any of the uber-violent physical destruction orented life forms we were presented with.

...and that's the first thing I thought when I saw the daughter charater trying to outrun the "wheel"...come ON!

And I almost forgot; the robot got decapitated & still continued to talk.....just as in the Alien. How original.

I liked the part where after the boys outran Roscoe they went back to the farm & found Daisy & Enos rolling in the hay behind the barn. And the look on Uncle Jessies face is unforgetable when he was told about it.

Enough with the movie...I need to know a good use for Charlize Theron.....

I thought Howard Stern summed her up best when he said "Charlize Theron is catnip for heterosexual men." :)

Ya think?
