pulley issues with ATI super damper.

hit a bump in the road today, went to bolt up some repop 440source non-AC pulleys, and the crank pulley is sticking around a half inch farther out than the water pump pulley.

as i recall the OE pulley is a bit narrower that the ATI unit.

so i need to figure out what pulley combo i need to make this beast to line up properly.

i guess i can call 440source tomorrow and see if they can help.

anyone run into this??

Mentor, get online with ati and study up on the superdamper pulley locations.as there are several different versions of fitment. good luck. also, catalog adds like jegs/summit don't have very clear discriptions on requirements to use these dampers for stock replacement.
 
I wound up with a shorter oem BB two groove crank pulley. Suspect it's off a cast crank, since it's shorter, making up for the thick cast crank dampner.

If you'd like measurements, let me know.
 
We've made/machined a spacer for behind the pulley, before. It worked better with our particular application.
 
I just did this on a small block. I shortened the pulley in the lathe by removing a section and TIG welded it back together. We used water pump spacers between the housing and block on the last big block.
 
I had the same problem. I ordered a pulley and two spacers from March. Not cheap, but I feel a lot safer with this than my stock cut/welded pulley!
 
I'm a little late on this one but ATI makes 2 balancers for Mopars -- a 2 ring and a 3 ring. The 3 ring is a better balancer but as noted is thicker so the pulleys don't line up.

A couple solutions are water pump spacers, WP pulley spacer (but these can't be too thick or the pulley loses its register) and what I did was order a DMI lower pulley from Jeg's, I think. The DMI piece has a very thick base that can be machined as necessary. As it worked out, the pulley needed no machining and was a perfect fit as delivered.
 
Yeah, I ran into this; found out the damper from the builder wasn't put on properly. I pulled and installed per ATI over the phones tech support.
Pulleys line up fine now. Make sure you have the right damper too. The model number is on the back of all places. So, either you know what it is or you are going to have to pull it and look. I always take pictures of all new parts before I put them on with my iPhone camera. If you don't have a smartphone then use a digital one and download all pictures in a file, Keep a 3 ring binder with a table of contents of all your receipts and sort them via the service manual so it is easy to find.
 
thought id update this thread for the sake of the next guy that trys this setup...so i ordered 5 water pump spacers from Hughes engines, but i only needed 3 to make it happen. the longest things that took to fix was finding the proper length water pump housing bolts, they require 3 1/4 inch to engage the threats properly.

You're going about this the wrong way. There's a much shallower crank pulley out there and when combined with a 1/ 8 spacer fits perfectly. I think the pulley is 3 or 3.5 inches deep. I know because I've gone through this before. I found a pulley off a member on this site.

i have used small block narrow pulleys like that before, but i dont have the drive to hit swap meets and hunt for stuff that i then have to clean, and paint or refurbish.

this was a nice quick off the shelf way to fix this issues.
 
Myself since I only race a little I used this Austrailian built Pro Sport dampner. Been on my car since 2006 with zero problems and all the stock belts lined up perfect. And it is SFI approved to like 12,500 RPM. Ron
