Will I regret trying to pull the engine and tranny as a single unit out the top, as apposed to the bottom, of my Coronet? It is stripped down to this level:

With it stripped that much you'd be wise to remove the accessories from the front of the engine. Your task would be easier.
Yes, pulling both out the top is do-able. Your choice of engine hoist will determine how difficult it will be.

Do yourself a favour if you have the available material and time/ability...build an engine dolly and the job is so easy. I tried the 'out the top' method years ago before building this dolly, and I nearly lost two close friends on the cowl vent panel.

using this dolly and a hydraulic hoist, I was able to remove my engine/trans by myself in under 4 hours....and that was being careful, taking care of all suspension parts, and cleaning as I went.

Where do the posts nestle into?

Into the k-Member bolt hole area - only two....so you undo those two bolts and remove them before fitting the dolly underneath.

Nice idea! I guess I will dig out the welder…. Likely need to go to the hardware store tomorrow for some castors….

make sure at least one of them has a brake. :D

That's a 318 right? While it's out,...

Yes it is a 318…. and no I am not going to do what you are thinking…. They can run very well with a little massaging ;)

Why? Do you ride your around the neighborhood? The power to weight ratio must be awesome!

I'd like to...lol
I remember a post by one of our members who had a 6-BBL 440 on a 4-wheel dolly and it almost looked drive-able. Had everything on the trolley...battery, radiator, custom test dashboard, a seat....looked like a lot of fun. :D

Hacked one out based on your dimensions. Only need to disconnect the throttle and lower the car down to the level of the stand.

How heavy is the front end without the the K frame, engine and tranny? I tried lifting the front end with my brackets I made bolted in where the bumper bolts and a chain across the front. It started to bend my brackets inward before I got it off the jack stands….

I pulled a big block and 727 out and installed again as a unit with the hoist you have (2 ton). I used a pivot plate on the intake to make it easy. Had to be raised on jack stands for the tail shaft to clear. Helps to have a friend keep the assembly from hitting the firewall while moving but can be done by one person.

I don't use the front lifting bracket with the weight of the engine and K-member in place....use a floor jack to get the car up and onto the dolly. The front lifting bracket is for lifting the body only - should not bend anything.
