Hey folks. Been away for way too long. My last posts was

about a trashed 70 RR from which I was pulling the drivetrain—a fast 400 with a four speed.

Anyway, I am finally in the homestretch and have a couple of questions.

First, here is the rust bucket minus the engine and trans.

So, I thought everything would unbolt and bolt on from the 70 to the 69 until I found this:

It looks like I the z bar pivot, the part with the “ball”, was welded in over the frame.

Can I get this from somewhere, or do I have to salvage this one?

I am almost done removing parts. Can anyone suggest something I might miss before I haul the car away?

BTW, the pic might not show it, but that part overlaps the frame by about an inch.

Hold onto that rod at the bottom of the steering column. That is part of the shifter interlock since 1970 started the locking steering column (not on a 69). I may have a few parts that would help you too. I will send you a private message.

Hold onto the steering column too. Floor shift columns are much less common and you will need it for your transplant. Also some other goodies to get would be the pedals, the clutch pedal support bracket (strap with 2 studs mounted to the firewall that provides studs for the clutch pedal bracket to bolt to), 4 speed hump and transmission cross member. Even if you don't need them....they're worth something to someone.

Someone will want the side scoops and tail lights if they are still there. The dash frame and every thing bolted to it would also be good trading material.
The rear end or at least the center section should be wanted by someone.
I would be interested in the reverse lockout linkage if you decide to let it go.
Post up some other shots maybe there is something else someone is looking for.

Are there any good interior parts? Seatbelts, seats, frames, door panels, rear panels. Radio wiper motor heater box, was the car an A/C car?

There is nothing really salvageable from the interior. I did get the radio and a few small pieces, but nothing else worth much. Even the dash trim pieces were cracked or completely broken.

I will get the side scoops. I am taking out the whole rear axel, but I could not just unbolt the leaf spring mounts. I tried cutting the leaf springs, but man, those are some thick and heavy pieces of steel. I might want those just for the weld able steel content.

I am confused about the steering wheel. How can you tell if it is a floor shift? I was not planning on swapping those parts.

Steer column. If it's a column shift there will be brakcts on it in the engine compartment that were for shift linkages.

Leaf springs are made of spring steel....too high of carbon content for welding and not worth saving for that purpose. If you want to pull the rear quickly just cut the U bolts....they're not hardened steel.

If it's a 70 road runner, it will have the ralley dash....you want to pull the entire dashboard and save it...the dash frame will be worth something, and it the gauge cluster is in there, it's worth a lot too. Easy to pull a dash...just remove the windshield and there are about 6 bolts under the windshield. Drop the steering column...which you should take out and save, and then there are two bolts on the bottom of the dash....one at each side on the door hinge post. Remove all those and the dash comes out as a unit. You will have a few wires and cables to unhook also.

As far as the floor shift steering column. 4 speed and automatics on the floor had a steering column without a shifter and the PRND21 indicator. The vast majority of B bodies produced used an auto on the column....so those columns without the shifter are harder to come by. If you are putting a 4 speed into a car....you will want that column so you don't have an extra shifter on the column.

Thanks. Good info. i really do appreciate the advice. I have never really done anthing like this. It does not seem hard, but I know I will run into problems at some point.

I have been down with the crud this past week, so I have done nothing on this project. I am getting antsy though, so I thought the least I could do is go back and look at all of the advice. And then it dawned on me, I am not sure my original question was answered.

If you look at the picture, I have outlined the part in question. Fran gave me a link to an eBay part, but it does not look like the part I outlined. I am particularly interested in the "ball pivot" thing that I circled. Should I look for this part somewhere or try to salvage this one from the car? It looks solid, but I would not mind having a new one if it did not cost too much.

The mount doesn't look like the one I sent but lot of crud. That arm on column is that for steering wheel lock?

I would say yes to saving it. Since you are parting the car anyway, cut the chunk of framerail that holds it so you have a reference on how it goes back in. The part the Fran sent a link to is readily available....but I don't know that the other one is...and I'm not sure how the 70's have that mounted. If it were me, I would buy the pivot bracket that Fran sent a link to as it has a notch that helps locate it on the framerail (assuming the car the transmission does not have that already)

The ball pivot bolts in a slot on the frame rail. They're available New.

I am looking at a complete z bar rebuild kit from dante's. It looks like it includes everything except the bracket itself. I am asking them questions, but I am also going to ask for input from y'all. It looks like if I get the kit and the bracket mentioned by Fran at the beginning of this thread, then I should be all set.
