Pushbutton a no go

Does this mean just buying a converter and pump for a 65?
And those will fit a 64 trans?

It's a 318 poly 2 barrel, and will remain that way, does it still make sense to change it from stock?

I brought it to a guy who is fully capable of rebuilding it, but admits he doesn't have much experience with these early tf pushbutton trans.

The starter ring gear is welded to the converter, not sure if the later converters are different.
We discussed this and he said he could cut it open to rebuild it, weld it back together, balance it.

To convert to the later converter spline you need a 67-70 input shaft and hub assembly along with a 67-70 reaction shaft support (or the complete pump assembly). Aside from the rear pump, cable style controls and park assembly, the push button units are very similar to the standard style Torque-Flite.

Just picked it up.

Guy said it had some real dirty fluid in it, even though the stick showed clean, he cleaned the pan out, new filter, one band needed adjustment, put in my new mount.

He said when he called it drove and shifted great, and it's a damn good trans. Definitely not rebuilt recently, but the cables work very well, and plenty of adjustment left on the bands. Hope I restated that correctly.

It certainly does shift into gear and drive great, no complaints here. Very happy.

Not a new trick but if I'm looking at an unknown transmission I always get a clean white paper towel. Put some fluid from the stick on it, then some new fluid.
It's surprising how even fluid that "looks good" on a stick can look kind of crappy compared this way.

Didn't think of that, good idea, I'll check it to see if it looks clean now, just for the heck of it.

It's a no go again, kinda.
64 318 pushbutton.

A few drives ago it a strange noise began, like a low hum/whine.
Noise is constant, comes on at initial throttle, never louder though at any speed.

Now it's back to not wanting to move until warm, same as before when I started this thread. Take off, won't upshift, hit second no change, hit first it downshifts, hit second then drive and it upshifts.

Took it out today, parked for 20 minutes, still warm, did the same thing. I don't recall it doing that when warmed up.

Floor pedal, downshifts fine, pulls going up steep hill no problem.

Put it in neutral, let it coast, give it gas, hear same noise.
Almost feels like the trans is trying to engage in neutral.

Checked fluid, shows too full, not sure why, I think I topped it off long ago and it was a little higher than full, but not this much.

Trans adjusted, filter/fluid changed with correct filter at the begining of this thread.

Is the noise pointing to an issue?
