Quadrajets?

A friend is sending me a GM Quadrajet to try out after I couldn't get a TQ I bought a few months back to act right.

After some reading I found that some have used the Edelbrock 1481 linkage kit to adapt them to Mopars rather than welding on a linkage from an OE Mopar smogger Qjet.

Otherwise it sounds pretty straightforward as far as installation goes. I'll be using it on a standard spreadbore Performer intake. Has anyone else had experience with GM Qjets otherwise?

If this fails to work I'm just going to shell out for a rebuilt TQ from Scott Smith, but I'm always game for free..
 
I have one on my Olds powered jet boat and it's excellent. Most people hate them but that is because they don't understand them. Q-Jets are not without faults and the first thing I would do is make sure the secondary main well plugs are not leaking. This is a very common problem but can be fixed with JB Weld or something that is gasoline resistant. Properly tuned they will support a lot of HP and I suggest getting a book if you want to spend any time with them. I also have one from a 500 Cad engine, which may find it's way on something.
 
Ive had several of them, two in particular that was tuned by a guy who knows a lot about them and they were fantastic, My 66 Chevelle was a 4-speed but when you floored that quad, you would swear it was an automatic, just kick in and take off like a shot, very quick.. I agree with Meep if there tuned right they are a good carb.. Most don't care for them but you get the right one you have a great carb.
 
I love the Q-jets, put one on my Buddies 408 stroker Mopar, works great for both power and economy, I have one on my 383 Chevy and plan to use one for the engine I am building for my Charger. These carbs were all built and modified by Sean Murphy in California, a Q-jet expert who does great work.
 
I had one on my 396 Camaro back in the 70s. Worked on it a month before getting it right. But once it was dialed in it was fantastic! Ran low 13s in that sar through the mufflers! The sec air valve, sec metering rods, needle and seat needed attention. And the floats can get gas logged then dont float any more. Lol. I would try it on my 451 if I had one because the manifold is a dual pattern set up. I have a square bore Holley 780 right now working great!
 
Great, this is encouraging to say the least. My friend says the Qjet is in the mail as of today. I'll be glad to spend some time on tuning so long as the leaks are held to the well plugs - I have a problem with knowing when to stop when working around raw gas :happy7:

Do I need any kind of an adapter to fit this thing to a 2176 intake? When I was looking for spacers there were always at least two different kinds for spreadbores in addition to ones specifically for Thermoquads.
 
I have a quad intake for a 440 here somewhere, to be honest, i didn't think many in the Mopar family ever used them anymore lol. I MIGHT have a spacer in the garage if it will work for you there secret.
 
Q Jet and TQ have the same bolt pattern and bore spacing. Should be an easy swap.

If you want to know what that Q Jet came from there is a 6 or 7 digit number stamped vertically on the main body. I think it's on the choke side of the carb towards the secondary. And if I recall the first digit indicates the year.
 
The guy I'm getting it from is a Cadillac guy, I'm assuming that's what it's off of. I'll see what the exact serial number is when I get it.
