Will the fender tag on my 68 Runner tell me if it should have a vinyl top or not? I have used the online decoders and they don't say yay or nay. Would there be another code stamped on the tag for a vinyl top? Thanks all!

Yes
I have a vinyl top on my 70 Superbee.
It's a "upgrade trim" code but I do not have it off hand.

Google: Mopar fender tag decode

It's ALL on line.

Vinyl tops 1968
NOTE: It could be a :
304
306
307

Thanks super-bee. So based on this picture, would it be a factory vinyl top?

Okay:
AA1 = Silver exterior paint
H4X = Black Vinyl sseat, split-bench
B8 =
B = Hamtramck MI built there (Yaaay)
8 = 1968

Seems like NO VINYL ROOF

Hope this helps

Remember:
Roadrunners WERE Taxi Cabs...

Superbees were ....Coronets !!!
Tee Hee Hee !
PS: I love Coronets
Pss: I'm going to get a lot of well deserved FLAK from that above statement..

Okay:
V08 = Delete Vinyl Roof (V10 = Vinyl roof)
AA1 = Silver exterior paint
H4X = Black Vinyl sseat, split-bench
B8 =
B = Hamtramck MI built there (Yaaay)
8 = 1968

B = inner upper door panel painted black to match interior
8 = buffed paint to go with AA1 paint.

the model year and plant are not stamped on a 68 tag.

68 RR's were built at Lynch Road, St. Louis and LA plants. Hamtramck built Chargers and A bodies.

here is a good explaination of how to read a 68 tag http://andy440.com/tag.htm

The answer to the original question is yes...a vinyl top is coded on the tag under the Y code. Your car does not code for the top.

No guru like Ski, but I believe you would have some sort of number under the capital "Y", like a 4,6 or 7. I know my '68 does for the convert top.

Like Prop says:
Gee Prop, this tag seems "bare"
Do you see an engine code?
I dont see it... (YET)

Trust me, Propwash IS the real Guru along with many others on this FORUM.
Thanks Prop AND 69coronetrt

SO: 69coronetrt provided the URL for andy440.com/tag.htm THANKS FOR THIS URL !!!
Am I to assume the 68 Roadrunner IS a 383 unless otherwise specified by a "Engine Code"
It would make sense..
ski

the 62 engine code on the bottom line tells us it's a 383 but not which 383.

No way I take that tittle Ski.......Only reason I had it off hand was because I was dabbling with decoding my Coronet's a while back. Lot of other guys take the cake in the Decoding department. I'm sure you have the upperhand on me with a lot of that historical data.

Thank you all for the responses! The link to andy440 page is extremely informative. Another little interesting thing, the T7 says it should have a tach but it has a clock instead. Guess it could have been replaced with the clock sometime in its life. Just a little history on this car...my good friend bought it back in 1979 and was his daily driver for about six years. He then started taking it apart to redo it. Hasn't seen the road since then. Over the years of trials and tribulations I ended up with it. Five years ago I sold it...DUHH. It came up for sale again and the wife told me I would be a dumbaxx if I didn't buy it back. Well, all said and done, it's home again as of Sunday! Anyway, when my friend bought it it had a vinyl top on it although it was not a factory top. It was real thick and soft with a real neat grain to it. When it gets to that point I don't want to put vinyl on it if it wasn't there from the factory. Thanks again all!

Glad the "TEAM" of For B-Bodies Only Forum could be of some assistance.
Return the FAV sometime, we all need help sometimes.

There is a wealth of information and inspiration here without a doubt!

Just curious...have you confirmed this tag goes with this car by matching the numbers on the tag to the numbers on the radiator support?

The radiator support should read G8R 329237. Look on the top of the support and if they are not there, check the engine side.

No, I have not checked that but definitely will! Just curious, what does the G8R mean? Guessing 8 is the year?
