I am just getting started on my project, and I've never done new body panels before. There is a ton of information out there, but I have a question I cant find the answer to.

I plan on doing quarter skins on my 68 Charger, when I cut the panel and butt it up for welding, after it is welded, how do I get to the backside of the butt weld for cleaning/paint/rust prevent?

I will have the back sides of both panels prepped, but once there is weld material connecting the panels, it will likely separate any new paint or primer from the heat and then be prone to rusting along the backside of the seam.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You'll have access to most of that entire weld for your skins. It will be a matter of crawling in the trunk to do it, as well as trying to work through the interior door panel metal framing. Trunk wont be too bad to clean/coat, but the interior side you'll need either use hand tools or a small air die grinder w/wheel, and some contortion tricks with your arms.

Good luck

Sounds like a plan, thanks a bunch.

Prep the front and backside of both new and old panels where the welds are with weld-through primer. It's designed just for this. If done right, there should be very minimal clean up required on the backside of a weld.
