If the timing is too high will it cause the engine to run warmer? It seems to me I've heard this.
 
Does your engine ping? Yes I believe if the timing is off it could make your car run hot.
 
Retarded timing will make it run warmer for certain. No sense to have it advance too far either.
 
Timing needs to be correct and will have an effect on engine operating temperatures. Read this article on timing.. Tuning Tips

Which timing are you referring? Idle/initial, mechanical advance, all in. Timing used to be higher at idle and then emissions came along and it was changed to much lower. The lower timing at idle causes the engine to run hotter, to help burn off harmful pollutants.
 
So what determines “correct “? How do you know that a degree or two more or less isn’t better?
That's the fun part of getting a good tune on your engine.
I like messing around with the rate of advance and total.
Changing limit plates, springs ect.
But yes, timing set to far retarded will for sure make a engine run hot.
