'R' block 440?

"r block" ? new one on me too. somebody will probably fall for it.

He says....."440 is confirmed by numbers on front top left of block. R is visible in the block casting front left. Bottom of block is about 3" below the center of the crank. I believe that confirms it is the "R" block."

I say, he's a moron about Mopars.

I'm sure there is a reason for the letter R in the casting but I think he just has the wrong letter in describing the block.

Blocks that have the pan rail below the center line of the crank are often called Y blocks. Ford uses this terminology for the 292 and 312's because I believe that was the first generation engine to get that design. And why do we call it a Y block? The view from the front looks like the letter Y. That's why!

An R on the top pad lower left corner means Regular fuel which makes sence being a real late motorhome motor.

And never heard any big block mopar referred to as a Y block.....but why not? I think Ford cornered that name and Mopar wanted nothing to do with it lol

Ford used the Y-block term as Meep stated but I always thought of BB Mopars as full skirted blocks beings how the sides of the block go below the main caps.
