R.I.P Big Willie

Who can forget Big Willie. I remember the magazine articles, especially one showing how big his arms were and that he benched pressed more than 400 lbs ! That is a lot of weight, especially back in those days! RIP Big Man.

More sad news.
I first met Willie back in the early '70s when the International Brotherhood of Street Racers would sometimes gather at York Field in Whittier (SoCal) late on a Saturday night to organize some racing. He was a mountain of a man.
My best friend back then worked at a small speed shop in Whittier and told me one day that Big Willie came in carrying a cast-iron Chrysler 4-speed trans under one arm and asked, "Anybody want to buy a 4-speed?" It took two of them to carry the tranny to the back of the shop after Willie left.
Big Willie is a legend and a true hero because of both his military service and what he did back in the '60s and after. The City of Los Angeles owes much to Willie for all he has done over the years for the young people of the area and in bringing all people together, no matter what their color, because of their love of racing.
Saw him again at MATS in Las Vegas a couple of years ago and had a chance to reminisce about the good old days in SoCal, then again at the Fling last year. It was easy to see how much he missed Tomiko.
The King and Queen Daytonas are together again doing some dry hops in Heaven.

RIP Big Willie Robinson

RIP Big willie Robinson you will be missed, smoke them thru the pearly gates, you will be with Tomiko again....

I had met him a couple of times, racing at the SoCal Brotherhoods strip at Terminal Island old Military base back in the late 70's, never knew him really though, seemed nice, we had some big time, {big money backers, not my money} grudge match races with a few SoCal guys in the early 80's with a couple of different cars, me & a partner had the quote "fastest street cars" in NorCal S.F bay area back in the day {not really true street cars, unlettered drag cars, occasionally driven on the street with license plates & registration}, had some great match ups with SoCal guys back then, never would show our hand completely though, early N20 days, 3 kits minimum on every car of ours, it was bad for business/wallet to show all you got.... Great Memories, thanks & R.I.P Big Willie, Gods Speed
