It soon will be time to fix the air in my 74 sat. Should I stick with r12 or convert.
Love to hear y'all's pluses and minuses

r12 is still very available,just stick with that until something changes.i work in the industry,and there is no sign of it going away completely any time soon.
 
Yeah R12 can still be had, actually there is a bunch on ebay. And I ran into a customer of mine who has two cans and all of the equipt to do the job.
Here is one more question.
He mentioned mixing it with Freeze12 and I'm not so shure about that.
1 I don't know what that is for sure.
2. I'm not so keen on the idea of using an "Almost" type of product.
Thoughts?

If you have r12,use it!!134 won't blow as cold and falls off fast when the system gets HOT.

Never heard of Freeze12...Go with "hemi-itis"-- R-12 if you can get it. Whole lot of pieces/parts need changed to convert over to '134'..AND, it doesn't work near as good.
 
I have a bunch of 12oz bottles if needed
 
IIRC, Freeze 12 is propane based? I've used it before but I don't think it's supposed to be mixed with R12. I used it because I could find it without a license and it was cheap. Even 134 is getting expensive but I don't know how much 12 is anymore....
 
current pricing:
r12-$3.95 per oz
r134a-$1.50 per oz
also as a note,never mix refrigerants.expansion rate is what alows for cooling,and some react with each other.
 
At the prices on Ebay I should sell mine. I bought like 24-30 I think12 ounce cans when it was going away like 10 years ago.

Go with R134A. The switch is relatively easy. You will need to switch refrigerant oil, accumulator / dryer, and valving and that's about it. No need to change hoses. Very little performance difference. Big price difference and you can buy the stuff anywhere.

You will need to change o-rings, older cars have rings which will not seal very well.
 
Yup, o-rings should be changed.....old is old. Hell, I changed the o-rings on my 97 a few years ago.
 
I think I'm gonna run the r12 and replace all hoses and o rings and anything else that may have deteriorated in the last 39 years.
