well i cant get any of my gauges working. i dont know if they are all fried or not. i have a hot wire going to one side of them. other side to the sending unit. how can i test the gauge. take a ohm meter and go from one terminal to the other.

well ill have to get my multimeter out and check to see how many volts i have going to my gauge. it should be wired up like it should be. i traced all my wires down and went by the color codes on the back of the dash board. i hope they all through the resistor tho. i hope im not running 12 v to them

If you are testing them in the car then you can briefly ground the sending unit wire - preferably through some resistance like a ballast resistor - and watch for gauge activity. Out of the car you probably want to give them 5V like Buck said then ground the other terminal. There should be some resistance across the gauge but I don't know what it is.

Your problem could be the voltage limiter (little metal can near or on the PC board) that supplies the 5V. I had gauge issues on my Ranchero and I just went to Radio Shack and built a limiter out of a 5V series regulator and a couple of caps. Cost maybe $3.00 and some soldering time. Hey, its gotta beat the hell out of whatever is on TV :tongueflap:

If you had 12v directly to the gauges they are "cooked" ,(they're only supposed to get 5v's) look at the pointers are they "pegged" to the left (way below normal) chances are they're done, the voltage limiter went out and the gauges got over 12v's! , not good!, replacing the voltage limiter won't fix it, the gauges would need to come out.
