I'm looking at one with the 318. Nothing wrong with the drive train, but it's not the set up I was hoping for. This car is going to cost me much less, than what I have seen for sale over the past few months. So my mission is to build the car I want. I have found a 77' 400 big block, complete with all the accessories still in place. I read several posts on the engine swap, plus the great one posted under "sticky." I want to keep the push button feature, on the transmission. What am I looking for, as far as a particular 727 transmission. Will all cable operated one's work in my application ? Any leads to what I'm looking for would be appreciated.

Thanks

The easiest way would be to find a 64 big block trans and big block motor mounts.I think everything else would bolt up.

I'm in the middle of this same situation. My 64 had a 318P which ran well but there's something about the sound and feel of a big block that I love but can't explain. It wouldn't have bothered me to update the transmission & driveshaft except mine is a convertible w/bench seat and I didn't think a shifter would look right, so I found a pre-65 bb cable transmission. I toiled with which engine to drop in as I have two good cores to work with, a 440 & 413. I'm going with the 413 in this car to be a bit different. I'm saving the 440 for a future project.

Also, the shift cables are different from a push button shifter and the console shifter that was available in Sport Fury and some of the higher optioned Dodges. So if you find a big block trans, you might have to change the cables.

Thanks for your input friends.

I also have a 318 poly and have a shot at a nice 383 from a 70 model. Is there a need to change the K-member to put a big block in place? I Know I will need a Big Block Tranny also. Is the pushbutton TF compatable with any known floor/console shifter, or is the later tranny the easy way out in a swap.

I think all the K members are the same. Hopefully someone who knows better can chime in. Mine was a big block car to start with. On the transmission, I went with the later style trans, because it's easier to get a shifter for, and the converters have a different spline count, and I wanted the slip yoke style drive shaft.

Thanks! At present I am just dreaming. But if the right deal comes along for a big block I might just spring for it. I sure hope you are right about all the K members being the same.
