I've had this print for a couple years; It's one of my favorite (in a sick sort of way). I had a friend ask if it was real... got me thinkin'; is it?? Anyone know the history of this shot? Looking at it, I don't think it is real. If you grenade a trans like that I don't think the clutch plates or the disks would be contained in a 6' radius... not to mention the flex plate and converter...

Any thoughts?? Any facts??? Any back ground??

Seems like the parts were swept up a little. I wouldnt think it was intentional. Certainly not the best way to advertise how durable Dodges transmissions are. Very cool though, did you get the photo blown up somewhere or did you buy it?

That photo is from 1972era his transmission in Ron Mancini's/Racing team 727 transmission on the burn out, IIRC in the write up article, the sprag/overrunning clutch exploded when rolling forward when it bit on dry pavement... I got the 2 photos from the Mancini Racing web-site years ago, it was a cover photo for the site entry...

Thanks!! I knew someone here would know the story!!! And I should have guessed it would be you Budnicks. I am curious, was it inertia or torque that blasted the sprag when the car bit? I gotta guess that Ron was still in it when it caught...

I was at A&A Trans picking up some parts and they had this shot in the front display case. I asked where they got it and they/Robert wasn't sure. Later that year I went to the Chrysler Performance/Swap meet in Indy and found it there.

That happened a lot with the super stock mopars! Neutral drop launches! NHRA banned it during the 65 season! Can happen to any TQ if it still has the stock sprag and over running clutch!

We blew one up in 1990 on my buddy's 65 A 990 car. Everything from the pump to the tail shaft was gone except the input and output shafts. Hanging on them were all the clutches and steels. It was actually filmed on ESPN at the NMCA finals in Memphis.
