HI my 62 Savoy has the orginal 8 3/4 rear end in it with the tappered axles and BIG nuts on the ends. I took the rear drums off to change the brake pads and found the axles will move up and down approx 3/8 of an inch and move in and out about 3/4 of an inch???? What is the best way to cure this if its not normal? It doesnt seem right to me? I'm also thinking of replacing the housing with a later one to get stronger axles? do you know what housing will drop right in??
thanks
in advance..:dancing_monkey:

SO anyone have an idea what rear end from another year will drop right in without cutting and hacking???

hi 62 Savoy, great looking car. measure it up and order yourself a strange dana 60. You have a 1st class ride with big block & 4 speed, so finish it off with a Dana . You might even want to get it cut a little narrower. From the look of your project that seems like the next logical step. Good luck.

like he said...do it right with a dana 60...they sell them new....just order one up

I swapped a complete rear end from a '70 Road Runner into my '64 Belvedere. It had a Sure Grip with a 3.23 ratio. It fit right in the '64, but you might want to check and see if a '62 had the same perch width as a '64. I believe that '65 - '70 rear ends are all the same width.

Histoy is correct a 65 housing is a bolt in, the carrier #742 is also a stronger chunk than an 89

I think your best buy is direct from Strange inc.. The slight amount of weight is right where you want it, over the rear wheels. And the Dana uses less Hp (12% from published data) to turn than 9" ford type. I have used Chry. 8 3/4s in the past but without the best luck. I think Moser has fabbed 8 3/4 alailable but the cost is very close to the Strange Dana. From ones i have seen, the workmenship is 1st class. Your final use and taste will decide whats best for ya. Regards.
