I have a 8 3/4 rear axle with Sure grip(I think)
Is this play to big?

I would say it's a bit more than normal. Back lash may be the problem. Does it run quiet?

No I have a wining sound at 80 km/h. 2 years ago I took it apart and replaced the bearings. I also tried to shim the gears but it was difficult to take bearings off without a proper tool so maybe it wasn´t perfectly done.People say when they have started to wine it is impossible to get them quiet again, gears looked like new though.

Agreed, looks like a backlash issue. Did you check the pinion nut? Unfortunately it isn't as easy as just replacing bearings in a diff, everything has to be checked and reset within specs and having broken in gears makes setting the contact pattern a real bear.

Looks as if the backlash is WAY too big. Specs are at .006 " I think. I have set mine with the adjuster by moving the ring gear closer to the pinion gear. You also have to back off the adjuster on the other side to maintain some ring gear bearing pre load.

I have done this to 3 or 4 third members, and they all worked fine. Get a tight ring gear to pinion fit, and then it won't make a loud clunk when going from drive to reverse. As long as the rest of the drive line is tight. I. E. - U Joints

Don't need shims to adjust back lash....just for pinion depth but that's a different can of worms to mess with. If you have the right tools, you can check to make sure pinion depth is set in the right location then adjust the back lash. Some times you can reset gears to make them quieter but it depends on how long they've been whining and how loud. If not for very long, then it's possible. Also, does it make noise all the time or just on the throttle or just when coasting?

.006 to .008 and if it's going into a dirt or oval racing, then .010 is usually wanted. There's a couple of possible things that might be going on here....not enough pinion depth and/or back lash isn't enough.

Well... guess I need to take it apart.I probably need to change my 3.23 to 3.50 because i have overhauled my 727 and replaced converter to 3000 stall.

Sorry I forgot to answer. It only make noise when getting warm and with no pressure on the gears(coasting?)
