I would say it's a bit more than normal. Back lash may be the problem. Does it run quiet?
.006 to .008 and if it's going into a dirt or oval racing, then .010 is usually wanted. There's a couple of possible things that might be going on here....not enough pinion depth and/or back lash isn't enough.Looks as if the backlash is WAY too big. Specs are at .006 " I think. I have set mine with the adjuster by moving the ring gear closer to the pinion gear. You also have to back off the adjuster on the other side to maintain some ring gear bearing pre load.

I have done this to 3 or 4 third members, and they all worked fine. Get a tight ring gear to pinion fit, and then it won't make a loud clunk when going from drive to reverse. As long as the rest of the drive line is tight. I. E. - U Joints
Don't need shims to adjust back lash....just for pinion depth but that's a different can of worms to mess with. If you have the right tools, you can check to make sure pinion depth is set in the right location then adjust the back lash. Some times you can reset gears to make them quieter but it depends on how long they've been whining and how loud. If not for very long, then it's possible. Also, does it make noise all the time or just on the throttle or just when coasting?
