The easiest way to identify an axle is to look at the cover on the carrier housing:

7-1/4" has a 9 bolt rear cover.

8-1/4" has 10 bolts, evenly spaced. The cover is almost perfectly round.

8-3/4" has no rear cover. The back of the axle housing is round. The center section is removable from the front of the housing.

9-1/4" has a 12 bolt rear cover. Rear cover is roughly octagonal (stop sign-shaped).

9-3/4" has a 10 bolt rear cover. The cover is wider on the driver side.

Judging from the picture guide above, it is an 8-3/4. It's round on the rear side, with no removable cover. The cover is on the front side, towards the drive shaft. Thanks, you guys are awesome!

Just keep in mind, if you intend to do anything, it's not a "cover" on that.. it's a "pig", which holds the entire differential.

Well I guess it is just studs, since there are no heads on the back. So, if I open it, it will all come falling out?

If you want the 3rd member out you first must pull the axles... sometimes they are easy sometime you need a slide hammer. Then unbold the 3rd member and it will come out but be awair they ar about 75lb depending on SG and gears

And it will "HURT" you if you are not careful. The are ungainly as hell. Have a place prepared for it to fall and cushion the impact like a plastic milk crate with some cardboard boxes in it or a carboard box with card board boxes inside of card board boxes etc.
