I'm in the early stages of building a BB 65 Coronet race car. I see we have some experienced racers here. Trying to plan ahead and would like to know what you guys are running. (1/4 mile)

What gear and tire height do you run? Also, RPM and speed through the traps?
Thanks for your input

Are you running 1/4 mile or 1/8? That makes a pretty big difference in what gear you would want to run! My 64 Fury has a 4.30 gear and runs 6.70's in the 1/8 on 30x9 slicks. Trap speed is 102mph and rpm's around 6400. Again, that's in the 1/8 and I've never put it down the 1/4, so take it for what it's worth, lol.

I would need to know more about your motor?
how big, compression, heads, cam?
My motors are all different some go through the traps at 6800 and my 65 dodge coronet will go 8000+ thru the traps.
My 63 goes thropugh the traps at 6800.

Right, thanks for the tip! I put the 1/4 mile edit in.

I think I saw a photo of your car. Very cool! Love those 64's.

It's a 572 but nothing radical. The car is a long way from the track. Just checked in with the paint guy and work is not progressing according to plan. Its very disapointing, theres a ton of work before the car is running. Thanks for your info

hey mark42202,what kind of converter do you have?i have a 4.30 gear and 30x10.5 and get thru the traps at 5600 and 89 mph?mark

My 63 is a street car with a mild 440 I race sometimes. I run 4.30's with a 30 x 9 tire. Has a 9.5 Dynamic converter with a 4200 flash. I shift at 6200 and trap about 6400. Best et is 11.49 @ 116. I also turn about 3200 rpm around 60 mph cruisin the highway. Ron

Try this web site, you should find what you need. http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculators.htm

What are you trying to do with the car? How fast do you want to run. Where does you motor make power? How heavy is the car?
I'm not so concerned with how fast the car will go. I have not raced in years so I just want to have some fun. It's a stroker but not really a race motor. I won't twist it much over 6000, if any. Don't know what the car will weigh (it's disassembled) maybe someone can tell me. It's 65 Coronet 500 HT full cage, all glass, floor and interior, alum race seats, glass hood and bumpers.
So at this point, I'm mostly curious what gear/tire/rpm/speed combo you guys have? And thanks for the link KD Bel 1 (Thats enough calulators to make me dizzy)!

I like to run as tall a tire as possible and gear it according to the rpm I'm going to run. When a short tire breaks loose, it's harder to recover it vs a large diameter tire.

OK there it is, plus my 200lb that's a bit on the heavy side

Just an estimate. My 64 Fury was 3424lbs with me sitting in it (195lbs). It was all steel body, mild steel 6 point cage, all glass, bench front seat, no back seat, no carpet. Everything else from the factory was on it. My 65 Coronet wasn't weighed before all the cutting began and won't be anywhere near stock weight when it's done so I can't use it for any other reference besides the fact that both cars are very similar in size.

edit: with glass hood and bumpers you're definitely going to be lighter. My Fury has steel hood and bumpers. You might be close to 3400 with you in it, which isn't all that heavy. Hope this helps! :)

We are running a 65 Coronet sedan, 498 Hemi, all steel except hood and bumpers, with driver the car weighs around 3680. We have 29.5-10.5 tires with a 4.56 gear going through the traps at 7400 RPM. Car runs 9.70's - 9.80's 137-139 MPH.
You running a 572 I would run as tall of a tire as I could with a 4.10 - 4.30 gear. A 572 will be a torque monster so you won't need to turn the motor that hard.

Thanks for that link to Wallace Racing I am allways trying to find the correct formula for something. Sorry I quoted the wrong guy.
