Is it normal to have this much gap between engine block and rear main cap outer stepped edge? The cap also seems to not sit perfectly flush with the block along the front and rear of cap. Is there a certain way to sit the cap in place before torquing to avoid this?

There is a step machined into the cap and into the block. The precision fit is closer to the crankshaft. You are measuring the spot that needs sealer during assembly to prevent oil leaks.

If this hasn't been torqued down yet you will have bearing "crush" holding the cap up (if these are new bearings).

Not new bearings, reusing my old ones.

That was going to be my next question, if this stepped area needed sealant. Seems if that gap is present oil can get around the rear main seal.
