Rebuilt the PS pump now have a shudder vibration

Rebuilt the power steering pump on my big block 64 SF. The pump assembled without any issues. Installed and at idle I have a shutter vibration. The pump is full and went lock to lock thinking it may have been air. It seems to go away at a higher rpm. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Bypass valve shuttling.
 
try this it may help.
Wipe filler cap clean, then check the fluid level. The dipstick should indicate COLD when the fluid is at normal temperature. Fill the pump fluid reservoir to the proper level and let the fluid settle for at least two (2) minutes. Start the engine and let run for a few seconds then turn engine off. Add fluid if necessary. Repeat the above procedure until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine. Raise the front wheels off the ground. Slowly turn the steering wheel right and left, lightly contacting the wheel stops AT LEAST 20 TIMES. Check the fluid level add if necessary. Lower the vehicle, start the engine and turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock. Stop the engine and check the fluid level and refill as required. If the fluid is extremely foamy or milky looking, allow the vehicle to stand a few minutes and repeat the procedure.

Thanks, will try before I take it back off and pull it apart....love these old cars but they can be a PITA.
 
Those pumps are pretty simple, and easy enough to rebuild. But, one easy foul-up, can be if the pump blades are put in wrong. Did you go that far into it?

I did pull it down that far...the rebuild kit I had only included the "o" rings, a small brass washer a paper gasket no blades or springs. The blades are notched on one side and it was difficult to see from the rebuild parts sheet how the went back in. Do the notches all face one way or?

Yes, the blades all go in the same direction. But, if you didn't get into them, shouldn't be the problem. Pump clean inside?
Maybe get into the service manual, p/s trouble-shooting, to get any ideas?

Ah...there's my mistake (at least one of them) as I mentioned the pictures on the rebuild sheet it wasn't clear it looked like they were installed with the notches facing each other. Do the notches face the rotation side or does it make a difference.
Also looked at the service manual it was better than the guild sheet but not clear either.

Off hand, don't remember. Service book shows how their installed. Spring-loaded, certain way to wire-wrap the blades, to get it all back together. Of course, pump, and blades themselves, only go in one direction. Rubbing surfaces of both the blades, and pump body, need to be in good shape!
I'd suggest, since I don't know what all you did, get back in the book, and study each section of the overhaul. If you have to re-do...that's what it takes.

Book also tells, how to press the pulley on correctly. If not done right, you can damage the pump...mainly those blades. Pulley gets pressed on, until flush with the end of the shaft.

If you have any ???s, fire away. (Remember...only hurts once!)

Just a note...there's an adjustable pressure valve on the pump body...

Do NOT try to make any adjustments on that valve. If it's no good, replace the whole piece, as an assembly. It's okay to remove it, for cleaning.

Just an update...pump "slippers" were scorn and one of the springs were bad (bent) bit the bullet and ordered a new pump (Saginaw style), bracket and pulley from 440 Source. This car is going to be driven a lot (when finished) and needed dependability. Will photo the new bracket/pump install when it arrives.
