If it's the thin one like in the example pictures, chances are that it's a non-factory replacement still; just one that was installed there a long while ago.

Probably better to double up on the rubber seal than try to throw sealant at it - or simply order the $15 ring that works right. Small change for the peace of mind.

I can attest to not using sealant.
Been there, done that.

No way any aftermarket retainer ring is thicker than the original, BTW.
I've tried them all. The original ring is the way to go. Just need the proper thickness gasket is all.
 
Look at pics in the first post of this thread , page one. It shows a difference in retainer ring thickness...........................MO

Yep - and it proves my point.
Crappy aftermarket on the left (thinner), Bill Rolik's reproduction on the right.
Bills' is as thick as the original; it's an exact reproduction, but no thicker.
Good stuff.
 
I noticed Bill has a stainless steel lockring, is it as thick as the other one he's selling?

Yep,
I replaced my sending unit and I used perma-tex tack on both sides of the gasket (sparingly) about 8 months ago. No leaks yet.
 
Cuda, thanks for the heads up on the gas tank ring, put my new tank in and used the thin lock ring, read your post and promply went back out to the shop and put my old ring back on, poured ten gallons in yesterday and No leaks, thank you again for saving me a lot of trouble. pw Dave
 
I just drained my tank using one of these. They are $10 at Home Depot. Just replace the crappy hose they come with with some better hose for another $5 or so and they work great.

Mine pulled out about 11 gallons from the tank pretty quickly, and when I dropped it there was about 1/2-3/4 of a gallon left inside, which wasn't bad.

As for the ring, I bought a new tank that was made in Canada and a new sender made in China. Both came with rings and both were identical. They looked to be about the same as the stock ring, but I opted to reuse the stock ring anyway and no leaks.

FYI Just installed the Lock Ring above last night it is significantly thicker than what came with the sending unit. I filled the tank up all the way and so far so good. Bill's ring is a little expensive but seems to be high quality. If you are putting a new tank in don't even mess with it get this ring or find an NOS one.
 
I just did my sender and the jobber ring I had to bend it more to get a tight fit
it good now
 
I put mine together on the ground and simply air checked it...soapy water on the ring and gasket tell the tale....
 
I just ordered the Bill Rolik fuel sending unit retainer ring and rubber gasket. It was nice here yesterday so I took the Bee out for Christmas. Afterwards, parked it in the garage, and later last night I noticed the gas smell in the garage, and this morning it was very potent. Discovered some fuel spill on the garage floor and the tank was soaked with fuel seeping out. Looked to be coming from around the lock ring and gasket area, and maybe even the 3/8 out fuel line. For some reason I get these random fuel leaks; will mess with it, then the leak is gone. Then BAMM, months later its back for no reason.

What is everyone using for clamps on the fuel line that connects to the sending unit? I'm using the factory style clamps that you squeeze together to spread them open. I'm not keen on those clamps that are tightened with a screwdriver, seems like the hose could be punctured with those.
