Relay connections

On the relay the bolt on the left has a fusable link and battery, the center is for the starter solenoid, what is the spade terminal on the right for? Also on the left of the old one it has 3 connections, which one am I missing?

Should be a yellow wire to the spade terminal which comes from the ign switch. On a stick shift car the other end of the relay coil inside the case will ground to the case so when you crank the car the current comes in the spade terminal on the yellow wire from the ign switch and the other end of the coil grounds to the case.
Now on auto cars there is one more spade terminal which is the ground for the relay coil as it goes to the auto trans neutral safety switch on the auto trans and it is only grounded in park and neutral so it only starts in them 2 gears. Ron
 
It is for a stick. The yellow wire you are talking about, does it come from the dash harness? On the old one what was the third wire on the left post?
 
Yes the yellow wire comes from the ign switch inside the car. The wire to the other spade terminal goes down to the auto trans as the auto should have a round switch that screws into the trans case on the trans on the drivers side and should have 3 wires going to it. The switch on the trans is called the Neutral Safety Switch and the wire in the middle of the 3 wires to it comes from the last spade terminal on the starter relay you are showing us.
Basically power from the yellow wire goes into the starter relay coil on that spade terminal and then the power comes out the other spade terminal which is from the relay coil and that current coming out the other spade terminal goes down the wire that takes it to the trans NSS (neutral safety switch) and grounds to the trans case so the relay can work. Hope that helps some but let us know if it does not help enough.
Now on a stick car the last terminal is not there as they ground the relay coil inside the relay to the relay housing. If you have an auto relay and want to use it on a stick car all you need to do is ground the last spade terminal to the car body or frame or anywhere on the car. You could use a wire and ground it right to the bolt that holds the relay on the firewall. Ron
 
So one of the few parts that I actually bought with the car was for an automatic? But this is what yearone has listed for a manual. I think I will just ground the last terminal. THANK YOU!
 
Yes you can just ground it as thats the way they worked in the 60's. Sometime in the 70's I believe is when they started using a clutch switch which is when they ran the ground wire through a switch on the clutch pedal so it would not start until you pushed the clutch in. You dont have to have it but it is a nice safety feture. Ron

I have a 71 with a manual and it does have a clutch switch but it was wiped out by the time I acquired the car. I just grounded mine out and it works fine.
