I have this overflow bottle that is not discolored at all and since it is in good shape I'd like to use it on my car. It does have a crack at the very bottom - you can see it in the photo as a dark line near the bottom of the tank. My understanding is these bottles are polypropylene plastic. Is that true and has anyone successfully repaired one? Can you use a plastic welder to fix one of these?

try cleaning the area, fine sand and use GE clear RTV or Marine type silicone sealant.

I agree with khryslerkid. Its a shame those are not reproduced, its the same one I have, its not cracked but is discolored and sure would like to find a new one.

My repro YO cracked with light handling after 20 years. Very brittle. Handle with care.

Mine had discoloured also, used a very light coat of Krylon white for plastic. Looks pretty new looking now.

Yea this one is not discolored. When I bought it years ago the guy said it was taken off very soon after the car was puchased and put in a closet. I presume that is why it is still the original color. For those of you who used 2 part epoxies - which one did you use?

Anyone know of a sealant you could pour in to coat all the inside then use for coolant? The crack is very hard to see when the bottle is installed.

I never have found a glue good enough to fix this kind of stuff... Allwyas gets peeled off allong the time. This is because the epoxy glues are hard, and bottle is flexible. Heat doesn't help either.

The real one could work is one able to MELT and weld the plastic on bottle crack itself.

Once tried a soldering gun to melt the plastic ( I have done that on tail light housings and grilles ) and make it one piece of same material back, but this kind of plastic melts too fast and you can open a hole on crack area.

I've been trying to find one of those for the last 6 months I found one but they wanted $285.00 for it.

And to think I sold my 73 B Body overflow bottle a year ago for $35.00. It was a good used one.

it is true that you shouldnt need an overflow tank if the vehicle has a good working cooling system? My 71 rr doesnt have one and never loses fluid after installing a 3 row aluminum radiator.

I can weld it up for you. It is either polyproylene or polyethylene.
I weld up any of the two and a couple others (PVC and Plexiglass).

I've been a plastics welder now for about 44 years. Now its mostly
a hobby.

Anyways, yes it can be welded. The age of the plastic determines the quality of the repair(s) because of how brittle the plastic may have become. Because yours was stored well it may weld up very well.

If your interested and have not already tried the epxoy on it shoot me a PM.

Thanks,

Mike
