That's a good one. Battery should be present at the dome light at all times. The ground is what is switched by the door switches. If the light comes on with the ignition that would indicate the ground is already present but shouldn't be unless a door switch or the dimmer switch is providing it. Check your trunk light switch for proper operation. According to the wiring diagram, they are common to the 12V source but not the ground supply. If you turn the ignition switch on and the dome light comes on, does it then shut off when the doors are closed?

yes it shuts off and map light does as well,do not have a trunk light switch on car.i tap the brakes and map light comes on too and goes off.

found this yellow wire on driver side that was not connected to anything except the dash dimmer switch, one end is not connected i do not see what it goes to.see pic. the dome light wires are connected to doors. IMG_0258.jpg

Isn't that the headlight reminder buzzer wiring?

Maybe I'mean wrong but doesn't the map light have a three stage switch as well? On/off/on with dome.

If the light seems to work properly when the ignition switch is on it would appear that the battery is being switched to the dome light. However, the dome light should have 12V at all times regardless of the ignition switch. Try this. with the ignition switch off and the doors closed, take a tester and see if there is 12V at the center pin of the dome socket. If not, turn the ignition switch on, check it again. The map light coming on momentarily when the brakes are depressed is not good either but stay on one symptom at a time. They are probably related.
The part I'm having problems with is that the courtesy lights are activated by a switched ground and the brake lights are activated by a switched 12V and your dome light seems to work properly only when you operate the ignition switch (switched, not constant 12V).
What about the glove box light?

glove box light works fine. thanks

map light harness has a timer for ignition lights.

this is for 69 roadrunner did they have that? i do not know?

I don't know if specifically Roadrunner's never had that option but it was an option on B bodies. The harnesses were all the same between them, they would just wrap up/tie off whatever option wasn't used or included in the car.

my car has the light package, which includes the map light, glove box light, cigarette ashtray light, and ignition light which is on a 35 sec. timer...(metal cylinder is timer) under dash.

problem solved i went back into the fuse box and moved a pink connector back on top of map light connection.it was plugged down on second tier of power plugs by itself. dome light works as usual now. map light will not blink when i touch brakes now.thanks to all
