Cousins Pat O’Brien & Jeff Reynolds winched the historic Orange Racecar onto the matching Crewcab Hauler achieving the mating of the two for the first time in nearly 40 years!
The previously owned by John Comstock Belvedere was acquired 10 years ago. It is raced occasionally and looks just darn pretty. The gold leaf Rettig Brothers door callout was exquisitely hand painted then by Chicago BrushMasters artist, Bob Behounek.
The hauler was recently included into the mix. A few gremlins were overcome with what my dad would say “a lot of shits and damns”. On Saturday October 27th 2018 lightning struck again as Bob Behounek once again and 10 years after graced and amazed the few lucky enough to be at this gathering as the gold leaf flowed onto the doors of the hauler. Pat’s friend Scott had previously buffed a shine into that Omaha Orange paint.
The loading was done shortly after the paint dried. The crew that helped, called the “Bermuda Triangle Inc.” for unknown reasons, included Staging Light Steve, Pat O’, Jeff and myself, Haywire. Bob was keenly watching and I believe stayed long enough to touch-up any mishaps. But of course nothing happens in the Bermuda Triangle.
The racecar was seen in the ‘we’re grown up now’ 1979 movie “More American Graffiti”. This movie is worth a second look. Rumors have it there was a fire at the movie studio and a lot of the racing footage was lost. Dreams of Cindy Williams and Ron Howard putting a signature or a greasy hand print on the Belvedere is a big hope of these gearheads.
