It is noteworthy that so many of us that were NASCAR fans or were diehard NASCAR fans are not anymore or casual fans at best....
So much of the changes that they have made have chased us, as fans.
But we still watch the BiG ones -- Daytona, Brickyard, CocaCola 600, Bristol Night Race....
I hated Dale Earnhardt -- he was an arrogant s.o.b.
who had a lot of enemies.... And his fans -- I think I hated his fans more than I hated Earnhardt...
The one year at Dover Downs, the seven (7) LOUDEST ovations of the day were the seven (7) times that the 71 Dave Marcus passed the 3 !!!!!
That was fantastic !!!!
Another time, at Dover Downs, he pushed Terry LaBonte into the wall to "claim" a victory. He said he didn't mean to do it. Mild mannered Terry LaBonte (in the Kellogg's Corn Flakes # 5) responded by saying
"He never means to do it -- he just does it."
Even then, when he was blocking for Michael Waltrip's 1st ever NASCAR win, nobody wanted Dale dead. He was good for the sport, love him or hate him. And, he could not best # 24 Jeff Gordon anyway -- so irrevelent was GOOD !!!!!!
No one hates Ryan Newman... He is one of the good guys.... We all want to see him recover fully.
That crash was wicked... It is one of the few reasons some of us still watch the Daytona 500... The one thing you can expect is "the big one". And usually, a crazzzzzy finish....

One of the strategies/moves that apparently is quite common and accepted in this type of
racing is "the block", where you see cars coming behind you with some momentum and
you jump in front of them, lest you get left in the dust.
Newman did just such a move right before the wreck and apparently was a tad late in his
timing.
I haven't followed NASCAR in years (pretty much when the last of the old-timers such as
Mark Martin retired), so watching a bit of it yesterday on the live feed was unusual for me.
It struck me right away just how touchy these new cars are if you get a couple degrees off of
squared/straight ahead in ones' trajectory.
You'd think with all the new tech packaging they have that they'd be more stable than that.

Regardless, prayers for Ryan Newman. It's a miracle he's still alive.

That was the best NASCAR Era ever....

Daytona 500 used to be the only televised race when and where I grew up.

First one I ever watched (or realized enough to actually pay attention) circa 1973 (I was 4, about to turn 5) I picked Petty to win.

The only reason Earnhardt couldn't beat Gordon is because jeffypoo was na$car's golden child.
I remember at a road course Jeff turned Dale and then drive directly into the door and stood on it, pushing the 3 off the track. Na$car said nothing.
Pooboys best and favorite saying was " they wouldn't let me pass today".
Jeffypoo, they aren't supposed to LET you pass unless they were told to. And many times they were.

I'm not knocking NASCAR,
BUT
I haven't really been interested in it for a long time because of the homogeneous nature of all the cars.
I prefer the days when a manufacturer could have an advantage because of their engineering and design skills.
Needless to say, the 426 Hemi and Daytona and Superbird are 3 of my favorite examples...
Now I could be wrong, and there may still be some advantages with different manufacturers' engines, but if there is, it doesn't seem to show up in the placing results.
The opposite argument can be made, and I don't question the validity of it: Let the different brands of CARS be basically EQUAL, so the DRIVERS and their TEAMS can be what makes the difference in how they place or win.
I just have a deep appreciation for what Chrysler did, back "in the day", when we were in the BEST YEARS of classic American muscle cars.
Oh, and the Boss 429 is no slouch either.

Not popular to talk bad about Dale Sr., but the truth is he died having done to him, what he did to many, many others.

In the grand scheme, he won a lot and died doing what he loved.
