cyl 1 60psi
cyl 2 90psi

basically all the others were 145-150

this is a 440 btw, guess its time to start weighing my options

Anyone know a good engine builder for complete engines :p

Where in FL are you? United Speed World in Tampa has my 440 right now, complete build, stroker, aluminum heads, etc.

I've got major fluctuations in compression also but engine runs good

Dump a tablespoon of oil into the cylinders just before testing and see what happens. If its bad rings the compression should go up if not its valves or guides.

Engine was cold and I assume the throttle plate were closed

Try it with the engine warmed up. You could have lifters that aren't pumped up doing it cold. Plus rings are not expanded, ect. when cold.

Throttle has to be open when doing a compression test. It creates a vacuum if it's closed and you can't compress air under a vacuum.

I had a hard time getting the compression tester screwed in while the engine was cold. If i did it while the engine was warm I would probably need asbestos skin :D

I appreciate the suggestions and advice so far. I don't have a leak down gauge, I will see if I can get one at the autopart store

You will also need an air compressor. Good luck.

One thing I did learn from this is that if your arm is on the positive battery post and you touch the engine you are in for a surprise

Engine seems to run fine except for the blow by

I just remembered I have the tester for gasses in the radiator so I will do that today

Let me ask you this: Is the motor stable at idle speed or does it shake an wobble? Uneven compression should show up in symptoms like an unsteady idle.

A rock steady idle would indicate even compression, and so would a beautiful, musical sounding idle exhaust note (ba...ba...ba...ba...ba...ba...ba...ba...etc.)

It does not have idle issues until it's been driven for awhile . It tends to lose rpm slowly at a stoplight light if that makes sense. If I put it in neutral it will usually pick back up.

Make sure you have very good grounds from engine to frame and body etc. Bad grounds can take out rings, especially if welding. Keep your ground lead as close to the welding area as possible and make sure it is on clean bare metal. Also disconnect battery when welding.A bad ground while welding can cook a lot of things even if they are unhooked.

I know your not welding here but it is just for future reference

This^^. You can also unhook the coil and here the lousy cylinders as you turn over the engine.
Just putting air in the suspect cylinder should tell you which area it is getting by.
