Can anyone tell me if the factory did the secondary body stamps on the core support and trunk rail before or after paint? I'm looking at buying a 68 Charger and the stamps match the order number on the tag, but they were clearly done after paint. Thanks

Pretty sure before paint. All I have ever seen were cleanly painted otherwise a stamp after paint would possibly break the paint and look rough.

I would think all holes stamped, sealer applied etc before the last thing on the body would be the paint ?

Thanks Guys - Here's a photo of the stamping. let me know what you think.
I thought they would have stamped before paint, but maybe I'm just used to looking at restored cars.

I’m disappointed, from the title I was expecting the thread to be about these body stamps.

I have not seen them stamped on the top like that. All the ones I have seen were stamped on the back side behind the radiator tank. Maybe 68 was different than 69.

Depended on car line and plant, as well as year. I have both in the shop. If you look at the link Delta V posted, you'll see the same location on another 68 Charger.

70 Lynch Road Runners were on top as well, while 69 was upside down on the vertical face.

Mine is a 74 Lynch Road Runner, and it’s on the inside of the support facing the motor.

My 69 Charger is stamped on the top like this one. It's been repainted though. My concern was I thought the factory would have stamped them before paint where this one looks to have been stamped afterwards. Just trying to determine if it's a legitimate factory stamp? Thanks

I always thought it looks like stamped before paint. My '66 is a St. Louis car and it's on the top of the core support.

I own 3 1970 Lynch Rd cars... Two 70 Roadrunners and a 70 Super Bee. All have the vin on the face towards the radiator. Also a 70 Lynch Rd satellite I just cut up also had it on the face towards the radiator.

my oct built 68 lynch rd car has it on the vertical facing the radiator

Body stamps are pre paint.

Different plants stamped differently. Hamtramck is/may be different than St. Louis or Lynch Road. Stampings is '67 may or may not be the same as 69.

Meaning...that top of radiator stamp shown is appropriate for a 68 Charger from Hamtramck. It would not be appropriate for a 68 Charger from the St. Louis plant.
