Found a craigslist ad for a 440 short block, its seized but only $60 and he has a set of 452 heads in need of a valve job for $60 as well. I'd like to build a mild 440 stroker is $60 worth the gamble or should i look for block in better condition? How about the heads are they worth it? I've read mixed reviews on the site about them. Thanks guys for any advice. I dont know much about big blocks or strokers yet but im trying to learn.

If you have the time and the means to haul around bulky, heavy stuff, then I say, take a chance on it. It's got to be worth that much for scrap, right?

You'll probably be able to get the pistons out eventually one way or the other. Any block will have to be checked for cracks before pouring more money into it so you may as well start off cheaper.

452 heads - I'm running a pair bone stock that have propelled my car to the 12 second zone, but it runs out of steam around 5,000 rpm. Everything I've read and heard says they are just as good as any other iron head if you are going to get them ported. I think some even like them better than the 906s as a base for porting. Stock, I think the 906s flow a little better.

Everything depends on something. You have to dig out the info if possible.
How long has it been sitting and in what environment?
What happened that it is seized? Is it piston rings, crank, or both?
A good block and main cap set is surely worth 60 IMO.
So too is a good crank.
Buying something sight unseen is always a bit of a crapshoot.

60 buck is a great price in my time zone for just the block.

Thanks guys! That i figured. Im gonna try and scoop it up.

I would pull the plugs just to make sure it has not been sitting with the cylinders filled with water. That could have trashed the block. If they're dry I'd take the chance.
