selecting a driveshaft

I need to find a used driveshaft, I can have it cut to length. !964 Dodge B body- A833 4 speed with slip yoke output splines- 742 diff in a 1965 houseing. Not sure without measureing which pinion yoke is on the 742, assumeing it is what the factory used.
Can someone tell me from what car or pickup I could get the larger, heavier duty U joints with driveshaft? I could change the pinon yoke if needed Thanks for any help................MO

Search the forum. There was recently a big thread about aluminum shafts, what trucks to get em out of, etc. good luck.
 
Thanks for the tip, but we don't have salvage yards around here with that type of equipment. I will continue to try and find a lower priced steel one.............MO
 
I'm not sure the deciding factor when it comes to yokes, but I can say for certainty that my 68 RR, a perf axle package car, came with 7290 joints (large yokes). My 66 hemi cars with Dana and 4 spd and my 71 F250 uses the Spicer 3/4 ton truck joints (1330 or 1350 - don't remember which - but both are big). My 66 Bel 361 2 BBL car had 7260 yokes. I have also seen a late model Dodge truck, like an 80, with what appear to be 7260 joints but on a very large dia shaft (because of length). And some GM cars also use the Spicer 3/4 ton truck joint. Just beware of using a driveshaft from a first gen Camaro or Firebird. The yokes are 15 degrees out of phase and will vibrate like a mutha in a MoPar. MoPar shafts must have the weld yokes in phase.

You don't have salvage yards with a few police interceptors in them? Your cops must be the best drivers in law enforcement. :)

Well, here in Cornpatch county, The Sherriff and his deputy's ride horses. Not much crime here as we still have chain gangs and public hang'ins.

I would NEVER use a used driveshaft. I hope you are not planning on welding this up yourself and using it as you are asking for serious vibration issues. Is there a problem with just having a new driveshaft made by a driveline shop for this car? Just find the closest big city to you that makes them and they will tell you where to take the measurements and they will build you a new on AND balance it properly. I just had one made for my 66 Charger and it was $250. and that included UPS shipping.
