Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Arizona Pedestrian

Only when not equipped with human controls will the car be responsible and per law I think that inludes voice commands.
I can just see it now the manufacturer paying traffic tickets due to proprietary programming.

Suppose the "programmer" was under the influence of something when making the program. Would the car or the programmer get the DUI?
Programming under the influence?---PUI--
Blame has to be properly placed.

I just heard that the Uber "car" was determined to be -not- at fault.
If that is the final story I am impressed with how fast it went through the court system.
I want to have that cars lawyer if I have a traffic issue.:)

Interesting story. I hit a guy with my '68 Dodge Polara many years ago. He ran out into the street from behind a trash truck (he was a garbage collector.)
Lucky I was going slow past the truck and hit the brakes right away. When I hit the brakes, he turned, saw the car and partly braced his hands on the hood, so the car just whacked his legs and knocked him down. I checked on the guy and called 911 and by the time I was off the phone the guy was up and limping around. He didn't want to go to the hospital (I think he was an illegal alien?), and the cops gave him a ticket for running out into the street without looking.

How many of us have had an "engine check light" come on indicating a fault in the PCM or a sensor? What happens when there is a short/glitch/problem with the guidance system in a self-driving car? Mowing down dozens of pedestrians on the sidewalk?

If you don't want to drive, why not take a taxi or other public services? Heck of a lot cheaper and the liability is still on the drivers

Just be cause you can do something doesn't mean you should do something.

Working in the IT industry for almost 30 years, I've seen all sorts of money shoveled out the window just because we could install new technology, which then proved to be no better than the technology that it replaced.

So what...?
I detest the entire concept of self driving cars completely.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I DO TOO! After seeing the contraption on the roofs of those cars, I`m wondering what they`ll do when the rotating radar (or whatever it`s called) gets really dirty from road grime/ birdcrap/ mud/ tar, or a whacko sniper ??

Reminds me of bank tellers, cashiers in retail stores, etc. The lines don't seem to move any faster than when I was a kid. Sometimes, much slower.

For example, try returning a simple item with receipt in hand. Sometimes the cashier stands there and begins typing and typing away on the keyboard. And I ask myself, what is she/he doing, writing a novel? Used to be: put the item on the counter, hand the receipt to the cashier, the cash drawer opens, the money is put in your hand, and your gone!

I have always wanted to collect the ways "technology" has made our lives inconvenient and compile into a best seller I would call "Technology Sucks". These days "technology" for me would be any item that does NOT use a computer chip (Like grandma's 100 year old toaster that still browns the bread just the way I like it).

Tech has hurt and helped. Here is an example of how it has helped.

Self driving tractors is a good application of that particular technology.

My question is where and when does replacing human beings end? There seems to be no limit and no discussion of the "human element" that is injected in our work up until now, and someone, somewhere is trying to eliminate that element, and eliminate us (working force) in the process. Something ain't right here and I'm glad I will be dead and gone before human beings become obsolete. Remember the song "Year 2525" we are not far off:

...and this doubly illustrates the missing factor in the equation- human judgment!

I was witness to numerous people with budgetary authority, simply reading the words but failing to comprehend the complete picture.

"wow, look how wonderful everything will be when we get everything upgraded"

...is akin to "look, a shiny object in the distance"

A true, seasoned professional, (OK, a good professional) has knowledge and wisdom beyond the facts and claims they are presented with, and can make judgment calls based on their interpretation. If the sum of the results of those decisions is positive, then you have good judgment.

Provided you don't have random humans (or animals) working in the fields, or other vehicles that have drivers that may make rapid, unexpected movements.

I have seen Uber driverless cars on the El Camino Real at night in the Mountain View area. They are usually running the center of three lanes at 25 mph with a speed limit of 35-40. Impeding traffic. The person in the car is usually looking down, probably cruising the web.
