So, cars been running fine, went to start her up today, and started but was running rough, then died, tried restarting but just wouldn't go, so took off the air cleaner and the secondary's were completely full to the point of overtopping the carb and gas everywhere. I am guessing a stuck float was the problem. This is a remanufactured carb, but who knows how long its been on the shelf. Anyway, guess I will be rebuilding sooner then thought, and changing the oil sooner too as I am sure with that much gas dumped into the intake, the oil is completely contaminated.

Just wondering if anything specific I should look for when tearing it down that may have caused this issue?

Its interesting, I just took off the top and there are two different floats in this thing, one metal one not, and the metal one appears crushed, maybe a hole in it as well.

I guess that was easier than thought, the brass float is full of fuel, that would certainly make things a mess. Nice job Holley on the remaned Thermoquad!!!!!

Figures. They probably cant get new floats. IDK

Actually new floats are readily available at the local auto parts store. Just don't know if going with Nitrophyl is better then brass ones.

How many do you want ?:icon_winkle:

When the Nitrophyl floats fails it is slower to sink than copper

when I sold parts it was mixed what was better

take what your part supplier recommends

Well, the other thing I discovered is the plastic housing is cracked around one of the internal bolt holes, not sure if this can be fixed or not or how serious this may be. Might just be better to start over with something else.

Do you still have original carb core to build

or they used to sell the center section not sure if they still do it has been a long time ago I was selling that stuff

just looked yes they do http://www.carburetion.com/Carter4TQ.htm

Yes, this is the large bore primary style, which I noticed is on backorder on their site, but I will give them a call, thanks for the link.

Nope, seems that I have to do everything twice with this car!!!!! She fights me every step of the way but I will get her done at some point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question on priming the motor again to run, as at least a quart of raw gas came out with the oil, maybe a bit more, but my builder recommends squirting a little bit of ATF into each cylinder before re-firing the motor to clean off the cylinder walls, anyone done this before?

That would be a good idea. I would think it be more to lubricate the cylinder than clean it. All the extra gas should have done a good job of cleaning.

Well, she is back and running again, actually running very well now with the carb completely redone and done correctly, she purrs like a kitten, but has claws when you step in it!!!! Just a bit of blue smoke when the atf burned off, but the oil pressure came up quick and is normal!!!! So all is well, that carb as a disaster, surprised it even ran!

The world is getting to where you need to fix just about any thing you buy as people do not care to do a good job
it is sad but you will over come and have a perfect car

Did you end up buying a new center section (fuel bowl) for it, or just reusing the old one? Glad she purrrsss like a kitten!!!!
