Shims in rear end

Hi FBBO
I‘m installing a spartan locker in my 8.25 rear end. If I put the shim (like it was stock) between the inner differential housing and the outer component of the locker the isn’t enough space to get the last middle piece in.
Without the shims it fits perfect.
Do I need them with an upgraded rear end?
