Anyone have experiance shipping mounted tires and wheels? What is the best/ least expensive method? I've bought mounted tires / wheels from Summit and they come with corrugated headers over the wheels strapped to the tires which is a good way to protect the wheels. I have a few sets I am selling but most of the interest is out of state and I don't know the cheapest way to ship these things. :icon_santa:

Tires with wheels i just wrap them up with that plastic food wrap that comes in a roll, couple wraps of tape and its good to go.If it gas a nice wheel sometimes i cover that with cardboard 1st.

Thanks. The wrap idea sounds feasible too. Who have you used to ship them and what kind of costs have you run into? I am most interested in finding the least expensive way to ship these things.

UPS but if i remember they add a extra charge for not being in a box.

The last time I shipped a wheel with tires mounted, I used UPS. Ran right about $50 per.
Use the cardboard to cover the front and back of the openings and either wrap, or I used nylon shipping tape, to secure the cardboard.

Good to know,Wannadrag(got any snow left?);I may be able to contribute to this later. A member here is interested in an original wheel/tire I've got,and I was going to check with OOPS first(hey;it's not a gas pump globe,so they can't break it!),as I don't think the Postal Service would deal with it. Jay,when you state "box",do you mean a typical cardboard box or just a "box-like" structure? Such as a wood frame of sorts? I've shipped large signs between two pieces of plywood via UPS with no problem.

FWIW, I've been checking online. If you do a detailed shipping cost calculation on either UPS or FedEx you can enter in the to and from Zips, dimension of the package and weight and get the freight cost.
On this type of package use the OD or the tire for length and width and measure the sectional width and weight and this should give you the actual cost - correct???

I did a 28" mounted tire/wheel with a 7" section width (28x28x7) weighing 40 lbs each
and entered my zip here and a NYS zip. Selected to drop the packages off at a shipping location with residential delivery. Cost was $107 for the 4 packages at FedEx and $117 at UPS. Every combination I tried had FedEx cheaper.....

I use fedex, just deflate and use the clear wrap and go around them a few times. I'm in the process of shipping 4 out this weekend.

Why do you deflate them - to create a smaller dimension and lower cost?
What kind of costs are you running into to ship yours?

I would guess you deflate them so you are not paying to ship the weight of the compressed air inside the tires.

The cheapest way to send them is by greyhound bus...I sold a richard petty autographed tire and the bus is the cheapest...I,ve sent fenders the same way...Check it out!!!!!

I don't know where the nearest bus station is in these parts, but its not in town here for sure so Greyhound is out. I think I'll try FedEx based on what I'm seeing and hearing but first I want to get an actual confirmation on cost before I quote someone a shipped price. I think I'll just drag one down to the shipping center this week and find out what the cost would be to some zip about 600 miles away.

I'm same way on that. For you it might be worth the effort to locate the nearest bus station. For me, I live near Houston but the two nearest terminals are 35 miles one way and I really don't feel like driving 70 miles to ship a 75 dollar part....
