Shorty headers or HP manifolds ?

I have hp manifolds on my 500” stroker TTI 2 1/2 exhaust. I know I’m loosing high RPM power. It still pulls like hell up to 5500 RPM. Headers would help but I don’t want the hassle of dealing with them.

What heads and camshaft ?

Stock eddy heads 10.4 compression. Hughes can around 540 lift Rpm intake stock Holley 750 double pumper. Bigger carb would help with more power. But the mileage isn’t bad. I’m building the same motor now for my RR if the heads ever get here. Been on back order for 4 months.

I keep trying to convince myself on Shorty headers , but like you , Street car 5400-5600 RPMs

If we all knew the HP difference on every particular engine , it would sure simplify things

Yep.

I would say, generally speaking, as the cam overlap increases, the advantage for headers increases over manifolds, and shorty headers would be someplace in the middle. The shorty headers would be closer to the long tube headers on a mild motor, closer to manifolds on a more radical motor.

You can build a motor to specifically make good power (550+ hp) with manifolds or with a compromised exhaust system, but slapping manifolds on a previously built motor intended for headers and a loose converter (i.e. big cam, tight LSA, lots of overlap) will really hurt power.

I would suspect that on a mild motor with a hyd. cam with 230 duration or less, there would not be much difference between long tube and shorty headers.

FWIW I shift my 500" manifold motor at 6500.

Nick's Garage has a pretty good video testing HP vs headers vs max wedge. You can jump to 45 minutes if you want to see the results.

I saw this video and was surprised at how well the max wedge manifolds performed and they look cool as hell to boot.
Would solve the ground clearance problems and give up very little HP if they would fit your car which is another subject all together.
Is it possible to use max wedge manifolds in modern B bodies with B & RB blocks ?

Have had hooker long tube headers on the 68 roadrunner since I put it together 20 years ago. I’ll be changing the steering box to a Bergman/Borgeson soon, so the header on the left must come out. Considering changing to shorty style, either Hedman, Sanderson, or TTI.
I’m tired of dragging the flange on speed bumps, and the Hookers have rust spots, even though they had Hookers ceramic coating when new.
OR…HP manifolds ? Engine is a 383, Hughes cam, 750 Holley vac secondary, edelbrock performer RPM, 906 heads, Mopar electronic ignition.
Like to hear some input on which one. Shortys or HP manifolds ?
Thanks much !

I went with the HP manifolds. Everybody talks about horsepower loss. Thing is who is drag racing from stop light to stop light constantly ? I had my HP manifolds coated by jet hot. The header guys will come at with their pitchforks, and torches. I already left the castle.

I would recommend manifolds, but OEM manifolds are 40 to 50 years old at this point. Between the two, TTI is going to be the way to go.

Make sure you run a performance, or straight through muffler & H/X-pipe if you aren't already. Maximize the power after the collector to make up for the lack of longtubes. It would surprise you how many people purchase longtube headers and cripple the exhaust system with poor quality mufflers or don't install a crossover pipe.
Tony's mopar, and parts makes repro HP manifolds. Tony does not make junk.

Here's a pic of my rebuilt Stealth head 440 with the Hedman shorties. Should be up and running soon!

Very nice - Looks great

Let us know how everything goes , up and running

I was wondering about shorties too. I don't think these will fit between the shock towers will they?
