About 6 months ago I pulled out of my garage, got two blocks away and noticed my volt gauge dropping rappidly. Turned around and as I rolled into the garage the car died completely. I had the alternator rebuilt. I have a new red top battery with it. Once I installed the new alternator I had pwr restored. No problems other then dim lights in the cab and dim headlights for the last 6 months. I was driving tonight and noticed the volts dropping, all the lights dimming worse, then the car died. I jumped the battery and got it home on 10 volts. Could this be a bad ground? If so what is the best way to identify it?

if i said it once ,,,ill say it a million more times....GOOD GROUNDS....GOOD GROUNDS.These cars do the stupidest things with bad grounds.

IF THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR ISNT GROUNDED WELL IT CANT COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT!....and your battery will drain because its not charging. dim lights definitely indicates a bad ground!

if the alternator isnt grounded....same thing!

ground battery to the rad support
ground the block to the firewall
GROUND EVERYTHING!

X2 make sure all grounds are good. If it doesn't have a ground, it will go looking for one, IE: thats when stupids thing happen.

X3 ... also just because a ground wire feels/looks tight doesn't mean it's making a good connection. Take them all off and clean the connectors and the mating surfaces too.

possible faulty regulator as well...obviously the alternator ain't charging the battery

Ask 70rr-brian. He preached grounds, grounds.grounds to me on one of my threads. Guess what it was..... GROUNDS. Its the cheapest to look for. Good luck.

Guys I wanted to follow up. Thanks for the support. After replacing all the grounds, and adding a few new ones I still didn't fix the problem. I decided to try another regulator. When removing the terminal I thought it felt a little loose. I clipped it off and planned to replace it. Upon inspecting I found it corroded and only 2 wires were left holding the thing on. New connector=13.5 volts. So happy! Thanks again

grounds and corroded wires on old cars...LOL
who would have thunk it.. hahahahaha .... congrats on finding the culprit
