Sludge- nipping in the bud?

Working on a 1987 5.2 roller-

I was pulling off the front end to change a water pump, and put on a 4 bbl intake, and...

There was a bunch of carbon "sheets" directly uder the intake, and a moderate ammount of sludge in the lifter gallery and under the valve covers.

Not horrible, but more that any engine I've ever had.

I got out all I could with a brush, screwdriver and shop vac.

What can I do about the rest?

When I had the motor set in, the shop found a leak, and replaced the pan gasket. they didn't say anything about a lot of sludge in the pan. They're friends of mine, so They would have said something if it was there.

I'm guessing it hasn't madie it's way down there yet.

I'm not crazy about products like "marvel mystery oll" and the like.

I've also heard that leaking intake gaskets can cause this. Is this so?

The engine ran pretty darn good in the donor car.

i dont know if i would actually do this....but.....i have heard of putting about 3 quarts of diesel fuel in the engine ....fire it up.....let run for about a minute then drain it....fill with oil.....run....drain......fill with oil again until all the diesel is gone. i might do something like that to my truck a but never my road runner. with the price of oil and diesel anymore...it might be cheaper just to tear it down ...LMAO

has anyone ever heard of this and actually did it?
 
I've heard synthetic oil eats at sludge, to the point of unsealing old leaks that may be 'fixed" with sludge.

I was considering a syn blend oil, then full syn at the next change.
I'd just really like to accelerate the sludge removal with out cloging the Pickup.

Anyone used "Motor Rx", or what ever that is?
It's kind of the same theory.

How about the "Gunk" treatment from the carb cleaner people?

I've heard a lot about "sea-Foam", but it says on the can, "for fuel system only".
 
syn will get rid of it and clog the filter with it, not in 500 miles but it will clean it out and stuff the filter. so pay attention to the oil gauge, and if you don't have a real mechanical gauge GET ONE.
Depending how much sludge it may hamper the pick up
 
Yup. First "accessory" I buy for any car is a mechanical oil gauge.
Auto Zone had a special on Valvoline syn blend and a toughgard filter for $25, so I picked that up. I figure I''ll run that for a bit, and then check uner the covers.
 
put a quart of trans or hydralc oil in it.but dont run it hard normal runing will not hert a thing.and change the filter after say 100 miles do this tel your next oil change and it will look like a new motor in side...Artie

Yes I've heard auto trans fluid such as Dexron 3, will clean things up real good. I've used it to clean parts, and it dissolves the crud away. Plus has good lubricating properties so doesn't damage internals. Good luck.
