Spark plug removal tips

I have a 318 with x heads and Headman Hedders. I was changing the plugs for the first time on this car and the 5 and 7 plugs on the drivers side are a bitch. I can manage to get the 7 plug but the 5 seems impossible, the hedder is to close to get a rachet and socket on. I used the socket and a 7/8 wrench to break the 7 plug and unscrewed with the fingers then pryed back the header to get the 5 plug..no can do.
Anyone got a speical trick for this situation.

After looking at tools on the net I came across some guy who has the same problem with his Chebby...I found an extra socket and removed the rubber insert and cut the socket down 3/4", and I can use a box end wrench to remove it, this should help in the tight space. Now I need to more spark plugs to replace the one I busted trying in the first place LOL.

I can't picture your application, but I have some things I have done for stubborn areas like that.

I make a custom tool. I go and buy a cheap sparkplug tool and then I do a few things:

1. I have thrown them on the lathe and "thinned" the wall on more than one case to fit a tight spot.
2. I have shortened the socket by cutting off the end.
3. I have "bent" a wrench or a socket extension to clear an obstruction. I heat it up in a vise and give her a bend.
4. I have cut-up a wrench and/or socket and welded them back together to make a special angle.

Papa always said "Use the right tool for the job." Sometimes that means making the "right" tool. :grin:
