Over the weekend I was looking at a photo of my fender tag and noticed that there was something attached. I recently read that the metal tag attached to a fender tag means the car had a special order attached to it. this one has four numbers stamped in it 1234. there are two parts stamped out near the number 3. Does anyone know what the special order item is?

What you found was a typical inspection tag (was your car built at the ST. Louis Plant?)
It is a common inspection tag and not specific to 'special order' cars. The punches just mean someone did their job that day, 'inspected' something and punched out a number.

Here is the Special Order tag off my '72 Sebring.....found under the drivers side front carpet. Prob fell off the steering column on the assembly line.

First line contains the SO number (0232 in my case). This number also appears on the bottom of my build sheet.

Second line contains the build date (B04, November 4th) and Vehicle Order number (J19966 in my case). This number is also on the second last line of my fender tag (above the VIN sequence number).

so in other words there were four inspectors on the line at any given time and mine was inspected by #3.

I i must have misread the prior post in this forum. thanks for all your help!

so if I find one of these in my 1972 SSP (not very likely) how do I know what the option was?

Do you have the build sheet - that might tell you something.

Look for the oddball thing on your car.

Odd diff ratio, weird colour roof....something non-standard for your model.

I haven't done a lot of digging into the SO code on my car as I'm busy just getting it back on the road, but I have a Y39 code on my fender tag (Y39 is Special Order) and a G35 code (delete std outside mirror)....I'm guessing it's that.

unfortunately not. the seller said he didn't have one. i tried taking out the back seat but couldn't. i'm going to try again later and if its not there look in the other usual places, but unfortunately the car does not have original headliner or carpet. if anything was in there, it was probably long since removed. :(

The only oddball thing is the anti sway bar under the front end. May not be original, though. I found a RR in a junk yard years ago and put the from sway bar on my 1st 1972 SSP. It was a nice surprise but I wasn't too surprised to see it on the car. the sway bar is not on the fender tag.

I found my broadcast sheet behind the rear seat back. That's usually only removed when someone is going to re-trim it.....my sheet spent 43 years hidden behind there.

You'll need to bend up the folded metal tangs at the bottom of the seat back to remove it...happy hunting!!

Maybe. I don't know the details of the actual inspection stamping. Different styles of punches were used. The individual identifier could be the style of punch or, neither could have any significance at all. who knows?

One quick way to check if your car was designated or headed for somewhere special...does the VON start with a number or a letter like the example above? During that era, 'special' VONs will start with a letter and general production cars start with a number. If it starts with a letter, let's keep digging. If it starts with a number...then it's probably a regular production car.

Pic of fender tag is in photo gallery - VON starts with a number. Very useful info. Thanks!

Thank you. Good looking car! I wish there were more SSPs around.

Looks like a pretty standard '72 STL fender tag with inspection strip still attached.
