Hi ,hope you can help me,i installed a new speedo cable in my Plymouth,It is the type that has the o ring on the end and slides into the tranny. My problem is at low speeds the needle jumps from 5 miles to 50 miles per hour.Is there a special way to install this cable.I tryed to install it the way the old one came out ,but im not sure if you can install it incorrect .I hope this explanes it properly. Thanks for any help
Paul

Generally speaking, the cable is attached, or it isn't. My guess is that the speedo itself is FUBAR'd

"Bouncing" can be caused by the speedometer head drying out. When a speedometer is assembled or repaired, they usually put a drop of oil on the bearings. If this oil gets old and gummy or collects a lot of dust it will cause bouncing.

Did you lubricate the speedometer cable when it was installed? If not, you might want to try removing it, and lubing it liberally with white litium grease, as you reinstall it.

Well i took the speedo cable out today ,and greased it ,It is a new cable ,endded with the same result.Maybe i have a defective speedo cable or a bad speedo head .I may grease the old cable and try it again. Thanks for all your help

DO NOT use white lithium grease!, that is the worst grease to use for a speedo cable.
use either speedo cable specific grease or a light wheel bearing grease, and NO speedos don't have bearings!,the shaft rides on a bushing, and ocassionally they do need to be serviced.
if the speedo bounces at low speeds maybe 10-30 mph, then smoothens out, then it's the cable, if it bounces or makes noises above that or all the time then the speedo heads needs to serviced.
as far as your speedo bounce, try removing the inner cable, and check to see if there are any kinks at either end,any kinks will cause a speedo bounce.
