speedometer cable

i put a v8 in my '63 Belvedere that had a six in it. the cable went in to the trans unlike most cables. i used the coiled shroud and bought a universal cable and installed it. the length seems to be different from the ones that are sold. so i made one up. i got about 150 miles and it broke off the squared end in the trans. i was wondering how far do you put it in to the trans. i put it all the way in and put the adapter in the gauge. the adapter was too long so i cut it down too. could it have been the fact i put it all the way in the trans?

If it's the '64 and earlier trans., here is what's in the service manual. I don't see how it can be installed too far.

Most likely your issue is that the speedometer cable you have is too long OR is routed some weird way (maybe around headers?) that causes it to kink a little bit. I ran into this myself this year & my cable broke right on the end by the trans. like yours did. I think that's just a high stress location. The first cable only lasted me a few hundred miles. I replaced it with a shorter cable (less excess to kink) and made sure I routed it with smooth curves & the problem seems to have gone away. Hope this works for you too.

the trans is a '69 904 so it goes in just like any other later cable. i don't have any kinks in it. it could be to long though and binding inside the cover. it is routed just like the original cable so it's pretty smooth. i think i will shorten it by about 1/4" or so and see what happens. if you look up anybody that sells them for this year, theirs are to short. mine is 72" and theirs are 62". this is measured by the length of the outer cover. i don't see how theirs could be used. it would surely kink if used. thanks for the replies.
