Speedometer Problem - need help

67 Dodge Coronet. My speedometer needle bounces and makes a clicking noise. It does move up as my speed increases but bounces about +/-10 MPH. I also noticed that the odometer is not moving. I have a new cable and good speedo pinion gear.

Any ideas?

this is what mine just did then it broke and stayed on 15 had to replace speedo . the oddom came loose is what i suspect

It's very possible the bearing (or jewel movement) that holds the needle is wiped out and the aluminum cup is hitting the moving magnet. This was the case with my 66 Bel until I fixed it.

Start by greasing the cable inside the housing before it does possible more damage.

I lubed the cable and it didn't help. Is there a way to fix it without replacing the whole thing? It's an R/T and has 150 MPH speedometer.

If you have the speedo out of the dash put a varabile speed drill on the end of the cable out of the housing and speed it up slowly and see if it is bouncing. If it does then the problem is in the speedo head. You can take it to a speedo repair shop and they can repair it. If it doesn't bounce spin the cable in the housing and see it it is catching inside the housing as if there is a burr on the cable or the cable housing or if it has too tight of a turn somewhere it is bolted to the body.

There's no band-aid fix, it needs to come out for a repair...the clicking sound is more that likely being caused by a frozen odometer assembly, causing the both the upright and cross gears to "click" , because they're unable to turn the odo...basically they're trying to climb over each other, (both the gears are made of plastic)

I work on these speedos all the time...I work at North Hollywood Speedometer, (818)761-5136 we've been in business since 1955.

I would also recommend a new speedo cable/housing, we make those too.

another thing...DO NOT use white lithium grease!!, it's the worst grease you can use for anything speedo related, use some basic wheel bearing grease.
