Spindle stuck to drum

See if you can find a product named "Fluid Film". NAPA sell it here. This stuff is incredible; better than any penetrating oil I've ever used in the last 50 years. Apply liberally to joints or seams, tap around with a hammer to set up vibrations and give it a while to do it's thing. Worst case, apply some heat with a propane torch or heat gun in addition to the product. Support the backing plate on all sides and use a heavy dead blow hammer on the spindle, with the nut screwed on flush.

I'm not seeing any drums.....am I missing something? What I do see is the spindle still attached to the drum's backing plate. Once the 4 bolts are removed, they should separate fairly easily. You might have to use a wedge to convince the parts to separate but unless they are welded together, it shouldn't be all that hard to get the backing plate off of the spindle. The upper 2 bolts do no more than hold the backing plate to the spindle while the lower 2 bolts (much bigger) hold the lower ball joint/steering knuckle to the spindle and backing plate but it looks like the lower ball joint/knuckle is already off. Are the nuts off of the upper bolts? I can't really tell. If so, drive out the bolts out with a drift. Once they are out, things should go much easier....

Dave I never tried it for penetrating( like PB blaster) but otherwise 'fluid film' is awesome stuff. John Deere says to use on bottom side of mower decks, etc. know guys who use it for undercoating on cars, trucks. I sprayed some on my inner door panels.

Thanks for all the replies, I've left them with a local mechanic to get them apart, I've done my neck in and shouldn't be swinging hammers at the moment. Apologies if I've caused any confusion with the termimology, that's why I included the photos. A Welshman living in Australia restoring an American car, by drums I meant "drum backing plate" but the spindle part was correct I assume? I wouldn't think it would be possible for the spindle shaft itself to be stuck to the drum as it's not physically connected. Anyway, no harm done I'm sure. Glad I wasn't asking a question about the front wings, uh I mean guards, oh hang on I mean fenders...

With wings, it'll fly!! :D

:popcorn:Did you get it apart yet?
Yeah finally apart, all cleaned up and sprayed with Penetrol, will paint in a few days once cured.

when I see what some people achieve in a matter of months it amazes me. I'm 2.5 years in and the end seems as far away as ever. I'm restoring this car 15 minutes at a time between working full time and 3 young kids...
I know the feeling. I've been working a consistent 55 hours per week and with maintaining my household chores sometimes 'the hobby' gets no time.

BTW, it took me 9 weeks to do my front disc conversion.

Anyhow, please do keep us updated on the progress and how the conversion works out.

What was keeping it from coming apart....rusted together?

Yeah I think it was combination of rust and old father time, plus me using inadequate methods to separate them, without the proper tools. I'll undercoat them later today hopefully and then maybe install them and start on the brakes this weekend. I have another potential issue to deal with first though, a cock up with the torsion bars....
