I started the 73 Charger up yesterday and let it run for a awhile since it was "not to cold" out. It took a few cranks to get her going but I noticed it seems to start as I release the key to the run position. It seems that I can hold the ignition on all day and nothing but as soon as I realse it she starts and stays running.
Could P.O have messed up some wiring??? I can't see how this would work!

Probably missing 12v to ballast/coil during cranking. IIRC the ignition switch should send 12v when in the start position and then send 12v during the run position. Maybe you have a loose connection on your switch.

Hey Al, Wayne,s Dart starts the same way,you have to slightly release the key before it starts or you will be cranking until the battery dies.

Thanks Jim I will be out in the cold garage today so I will look it over...LOL.
Rick I thought that would be something Frank would have to fix or it would drive him nuts.....LOL
I figured it would be caused by either an extra wire or the lack of one *g*

Hey Al ,Frank has the service manual,it would have the electrical drawings so you can troubleshoot. Time for a break?

I might do that, I have to treat my well today also, so I guess not this weekend....Frank does want an exhaust fan for the shop when he is welding I told him I will drop one off next time I am heading over and he can try it out.

Why the switch? It starts when the key is released, so it seams like it would be a wire reversed or missing would it not?
I would assume a bad switch would not allow it to start at all.
Al

There are two wires from the switch to the ignition system. One provides 12v when the key is in the "start" position and the other provides 12v in the "run" position. There are contacts inside the switch that may be not making a good connection in the start position. Your engine will crank all day and never start until you release the key into the run position.
