I just installed a NEW set of DOUGS 2"/3.5" Collector headers. They fit like a glove. My starter took a dump so I got info off various Mopar sites (forums) ... Moparites & FBBO... and found that a starter spected for a 1984 Dodge Dakota V8 was the one. Got it at Oriellys for 89.95 with a lifetime guarantee. ... It was a perfect fit.

That good...no....its.great to know, I have the same headers and was wondering how well they fit and what starter to use. No issues passing over the torrsion bars or steering box???
Mike can you tell me how you installed them? My motor is on a stand and was wondering if I needed to put them in the bay first or will they slip down afterwards...???....Others have stated you can lift one side up with little resistance, but I would like to hear more about your adventure!
Thanks!

1. Undo bottom bolt out of both mtr mts 2. Jack up.motor till trans touches firewall. 3. Undo nuts off tie rods.
Both sides...pull down tierod. 4.
Passenger side just slides up and in. (Up from bottom) 5. Drivers side .... 6. Cradle starter up into header and hook up starter wires (the wires go between #1 and #3 tubes. ( REMOVE THE STUD EXTENSION PIECE OF THE STARTER...IT WILL HIT THE BLOCK) 7. Wiggle starter & header up together and install a couple header bolts. Rear bolt first. ( I INSTALLED A "STUD INOT THE REAR HEADER BOLT HOLE AND HUNG THE HEADER ON THE STUD THEN PUT THE OTHER BOLTS IN. I then used a lock washer and nut on that stud) BEFORE u put other header bolts in attach the starter using the starter stud and bolt.....that's it.

Headers do not hit starter or torsion bars or steering box. #6 spark plug is a little tricky to get in but it's doable...rest are a snap and plug wires have lots of clearance. Thick flanges and good gaskets are included . .. I cut a "notch" out of the frt and rr header gasket bolt holes so I can install frt and rr bolts and then drop the gasket into place and put in the remaining bolts

Isn't there a mini with the wire lugs on the opposite side, rather than against the block?

The 1984 Dakota Oriellys starter works great. ..89.95

I've been leaning towards that one. Was just concerned about the terminals, even though everyone else is useing them.
I just got back to working on the engine compartment, so I'll be giving it a try in the near future.
Thanks Mike for sharing!

Mike I have a Dakota starter on my sons 400 Dart that has 2" CPPA headers on it. I actually worked at a Dodge dealer and put the eng in that Dart on a saturday at the dealership as I used a lift and when I needed a starter I just got one from our parts that was actually listed for a V/6 Dakota but I think the V/8 called for the same one. You like to know that starter is still in his Dart and it was in 1997 when I put it on the Dart as I put a 383 in it then but it still has the same starter in it with the 400 in it now. And it has never gave any trouble. All I did was put some heat wrap around the starter since its so close to the header pipes. Glad you got one and it works good for you. Ron

I think that starter for the dakota has a funky terminal extension on it that can be removed, makes it easier

Good to hear Mike . I have some Dougs in my office waiting to go in with my 505 . I have a CVR starter

Mike: Thank You for an interesting post. Thank You members for knowledgeable thoughts, experiences and ideas. This is why I am here. Thanks Dave

Mike I have had great luck using that same type of started. 1st w/Hooker headers and now w/TTI stepped headers. I've been using the same starter since 1988.
