Bigger Headers, Slower Car

The engine masters episode on this is what we need. It was good.

I tend to agree with RebelRouser, what ever size the exhaust port is, make the flange/pipe shape match that and step up from there. Larry Meaux who created Pipemax is the MAN ! I use Burns software also and used Don Kromer of Kromerkraft. Don's sizes/steps picked up almost 60 hp over the best dyno headders Koffel had on a 557 TS headded top dragster way back.

I’ve read & reread and don’t see it——- paint ur extensions with a light stripe of white paint on one side. After a couple runs, see where the paint discoloration starts & chop the extensions at that point.(if I remember correctly). My 18” extensions had about 4-6” cut off them. This was a long time ago!!! May not be pertinent anymore.
Friday I put a stripe down the extensions with a pink paint marker.

After 2 or 3 passes I checked it and it was turned white the whole way ???

Oh man, I either had 1-7/8 or 2” Hookers.(almost 50yrs ago in a 440). WAG is you’re still running lean(?)

This is a plug from cyl 4 and 7.
One 1/8 mile pass, immediate shut down.

What can you guys tell me?

When I first installed 2” headers on my car, it was part of a change to the whole combo.
Cam, converter, carb, gears, rear tires, SS springs…… and the 2” headers…..all in one shot.
The car picked up about .5 and 5mph.

I thought my car was pretty fast for what it was at the time.
Mid-11’s in ‘87.

I’d say, that combo was able to make use of the 2” headers.
At that stage of the game, I don’t know that the 2” headers “helped”(over the 1-3/4” that I took off), but I doubt they hurt the performance.

I have the 2" Doug's D452 headers on my Savoy but I installed them when I put the 493 and the EZ heads on it. When I was building this engine Nick Wilson told me the 2" headers would be a good choice with my new combo.
I agree with the plugs look a little lean.

I didn’t get a chance to change jets today, as I entered two classes.
I managed to get runner up in Sportsman.

Nice job! The car and the driver are consistent. You coming to the Mopar race at 42 ?

Nick would know, he was a legend around here.

I won’t be able to make it, UMTR has a race at Quaker that Saturday.

Padam, how much timing are you giving the motor ?
It should be 38 deg, I need to check it.

My carb is a Quick Fuel 850.
I changed jets:
Primary from 76 to 79 (with power valve)
Secondary from 86 to 90 (no power valve)

I really wanted to make this the only change, but I got a hole in 1 slick after final round last week, so I installed tubes. Added weight, may have an effect.

Maybe a little. But also maybe, maybe the stiffer sidewalls in your slicks due to the tubes might help. One way to find out...... (look at your 60ft.)

What dist. are you using ? Is it locked out ? If not, did you rework the curve ?
It’s an old MP vac advance distributor. Vac advance is disconnected now, it’s all in pretty quick but I’m not sure what the curve is.

I’m leaving on the 2-step at 4k, with the gas on the floor. Shifting at 5500.

I have a 2 day UMTR race Saturday and Sunday, do I won’t really be able to do much tuning.

Those plugs look lean to me,
I'd go up another 3 jet sizes in both front & rear,
at least the fronts
with a power valve it's usually in the range of 6 jets different
between front & rear

***optional;
if it's not hitting the tires hard when you stomp on it, at launch/tree
maybe add a bigger size, accelerator pump squirter nozzle too
if it's a like a 35, go to a 37
if it's like a 31, go to a 35

you may need more shot even out of the hole
if that's the case try or go to a 50cc pump on the front,
with lil' to no gap in the linkage/plunger, ***maybe a brown cam too
4 speeds like fuel at the hit, when release of the clutch, if all else is right

did you fix
replace them Bastardi'd sized/undersized 2-1/2" header extensions,
& go to 3" or 3-1/2" if that's your collector size,
if not do so

probably too hot of a plug heat range too, go down 1 colder in range
run it check the plugs again
maybe; also don't use the extended tip style spark plugs either
may not be needed, they tend to be hotter too, like 1/2 a range

but do 1 change at a time,
'test It' & read the plugs

probably too much total timing too, try 2*s less also
go from there,
read the plug between changes, look at where it burns on the strap
a lil' less timing will "usually" also help in MPH
more timing at the hit sort of helps, if it's needed
that's just a band-aid for miss matched parts thou

& do 1 change at a time
so you'll know what it was, what works, keep a log of what you do too
weather, cloud cover, sun or cold & condition of the track

& read the plugs 'between each change'

Look at the chart below,
copy it to paper & use it like it's your religion

With the gas on the floor at the hit, the accelerator pumps not affecting it I think.
Couple weeks ago I tried leaving without the 2 step (IHRA doesn’t allow it in sportsman class).
So at part throttle and then mashing it at the hit it did seem to come out of the hole better.
But with the jet changes and the tire tubes today I was .100 slower in the 1/8, .05 in 60’

I didn’t get a chance to pull the plugs today.

Red lit in the semi’s.
