starter not starting

If it cranks jumping the firewall relay, turn the key on and it should start while doing so. If it won't fire then you fried the fusable link or have a bulkhead connection issue (which would explain why it won't crank with the key!)

Then it's either your neutral safety switch on the transmission, the wiring from it to the relay you just jumped or the relays solenoid. Next test, there are two spaded wires below the studs you jumped to make it crank. Leave the yellow wire on and pull the other one off. Put a wire from ground to the terminal you just took the wire off. Turn the key... if it now starts then the solenoid is good and you have a wiring issue to the NSS or the NSS is pooched.

So we did that and it worked, how long can we keep it like this, we need to register the car and want to know if it will ruin anything before we can fix the problem

As long as you're always in Park or Neutral you can leave it that way for ever. 4 speed cars are permantly grounded like that.
